I know, I have a set of micrometers and dial bore indicators, and know how to use them. My main crank journals were exact on 2 of them, one thousandth off on one, and two thousandths off on another. My cylinder honing was dead on. I had screw in studs and rocker arm guideplates installed on the heads, and ported and polished, and had everything zero decked so that my pistons are all the same amount "in the hole." (15 thousandths I wanna say..cant quite remember). All that work cost me maybe...800$ I think. Also, all the machine work was done by Lynwood Daughtery....a pretty famous machinist around here who used to do Nascar engines for Terry Labonte and who has a quite impressive drag race shop of his own now with some top notch cars.
You may think that is special, but you just described a pretty standard engine rebuild. (which $8k is way too much for)
The work Lee had done was extensive, very impressive and not to be compared with a plain jane domestic v8 rebuild.
