The last defense of the oil industry though is that they are being required to run more ethanol in their gasoline instead of MTBE which further pushes up the price for gas.

exactly. cleaner burning fuel will cost more to produce with more ethanol mixed in. so now that someone is actually trying to do something about slowing emissions affecting global warming, we get more complaints about gas prices. i dont blame basic economics, i blame the bush administration. *cue firestorm*
