do you really need a new shell? couple dented panels, frame is still straight....seems overboard to me

Depends on for how much he can get a new shell. That damage will add up quickly counting pannels, bumpers, and painting. He's also not sure the rear frame is ok, yet. Also, it'd provide the opportunity for doing it "right" the first time (seam weld, etc). Of course, all pending he finds a good deal somewhere.
