If you are getting a little starvation, its not enough to seriously hurt the engine, but it may be enough to get the engine hotter than it should be, and cause it to loose some power.
the slippery slope comment was really just about the "i dont care if its against the rules" kind of attitude. You can justify cheating any way you want, its still cheating.
