oil pressure in long corners? - BLINGMW - 07-18-2005

so this was the first weekend I tracked my 318 with an oil pressure gauge installed. I've heard you want to maintain about 10psi per 1k RPM (don't know if this is valid at all), but mine certianly does in a straight line, usually is around 50psi after 3k and almost 70 at redline.

But I was a little concerned as I layed it into some long righthanders at Roeblingbling, pressure would start to fall off, and through apex and exit, it'd be maintaining more like 30psi. Running a little overfull helped, I was seeing more like 25 or less before I added another half quart. I started running more of the long corners in 4th just to keep the revs down a bit with such low pressure. Short rights and any left were no problem.

Does anyone know if this is "normal"? I'll ask around, but just wanted to know what you all have heard. Many BMW's have pressure problems when holding a hard right, complicated by the slant of the engine and oil sloshing up the side of the block, I just don't know how low should be considered dangerous.

Any tech info or links would be much appriciated! Conjecture and hearsay will be tolerated. :wink:

There is no universal rule as far I know... it really depends on the vehicle type. My car is frequently between 60-85psi while I'm at speed...

no can do. If I race the thing (hopefully next year), it's illegal and I don't particularly want to spend the $$ anywho.

A baffled oil pan or accusump are illegal? Jesus christ that is the fucking stupidest thing I've ever heard of. I've heard of one or the other being illegal but not both.

That just seems dumb. Niether give the car extra power, if they are concerned about big $$$ engines then making items ILLEGAL that prevent engines from blowing up is not the way to go about it. I'd protest, sell that pile and come over to AI :lol:

In what series? I agree, what a non hetero rule. If your lucky enough to have a baffled oil pan for available for your car, its not the hardest thing to change for an event.

You can make your own baffled pan. Pull the pan off and have a race/fab shop weld some baffles in.

This thread actually got me thinking about that, and I was looking around online. I noticed most (maybe all of them?) use trap doors. So, do they all use that? How exactly would you design the baffles?

Well, basically look at where the pick up is and have a shop weld in some baffling to keep the earl around the pickup under cornering and accel/deccel.

That pan looks like it has no baffling whatsoever, which is kind of scary. Most of the honda pans have the sump in a 'hole' and some baffling around it, although its usually not enough for track duty. I've got a spare pan I need to have worked over.

I'm sure Dale Engineering out 33w could hook something up with that pan. The trap doors are neat because the earl will drain back faster, but I dont think its essential.

I can TIG, so if its easy I'll do it myself. Im just not sure where to put the baffles in exactly. Got any good pictures of some DIY pans?

Yeah, I can't see how a baffle would be illegal.

Why not nick someone's trick baffle design in an s14? Between them and any other m10 (2002) guys, there's gotta be some good ones.

Yeah, I have been thinking about buying a TIG instead of bumming off other people. I think it would pay for itself pretty quick with how many people need stuff welded. I just don't have that much extra cash laying around right now to blow.

here are some pics of my Canton Oil Pan, the sump goes down into the baffles, (duh)
It has 4 trap doors that shut as the oil sloshes around.

Hmm, those almost look like door hinges without bolt holes. Is there anywhere else for the oil to flow into the pan (except where the pickup is?)? Is that what those holes are for that are on the left of the second picture?

oil can go around them, but when you are in a turn or hard brake or accel it stays around the pickup. There are not really any 'holes' more so oil paths. Canton will make you a baffled oil pan, just send them one and tell them what you want.
