There's a really cool tool you can buy for like 10 bucks. It's essentially a hose with a threaded end that you thread down in the spark plug hole, you then shoot compressed air into. If you hear whistling on the intake side, then you've got intake valves that aren't seated or bent. Same for the exhaust side. You can even attach a whistle to the hose, and use it to determine TDC.
