smoke with the vtec... - Sijray21 - 03-14-2005 Hey guys, i know most of you are familiar with honda's and i think some of you are familiar with this problem, but it appears that i'm burning some oil and smoke is puffing out of the exhaust. After researching some things i found out that it could be one of two things: Valve seals going bad and Piston Rings wearing. What do you guys think i should do? Other symptoms: After driving form Columbus, SC to Melbourne, FL i lost about 1/2 qt of oil, going into vtec range a few times. Thanks - Mike - 03-14-2005 what would i do? keep a close eye on the oil level, run a compression test. any chance this could be a result of the thieves joyriding? - Sijray21 - 03-14-2005 Mike Wrote:what would i do? keep a close eye on the oil level, run a compression test. any chance this could be a result of the thieves joyriding? i didn't even think about the thieves, it could be, but somehow i doubt it. It has 132,080 miles on everything so i'm guessing it's just old age. I meant to do that, anyone have a compression tester? or whatever it's called. i've been keeping a close eye on the oil level and refilling it till the low oil indicator on the dipstick is read. - JohnC - 03-14-2005 theguywiththeSi Wrote:Mike Wrote:what would i do? keep a close eye on the oil level, run a compression test. any chance this could be a result of the thieves joyriding? I've got a compression tester set. We can do it at the autocross if you want (or you can come out to my place before then)... - .RJ - 03-14-2005 Now the mad scientist and I are gonna have to rip apart the bun and replace the onion rings you fried - Sijray21 - 03-14-2005 JohnC Wrote:I've got a compression tester set. (if it isn't too much that is) Hopefully it's just the valveseals and then i can get them replaced - Mike - 03-14-2005 you should just part the motor out and get a fresh b18c5. i've got dibs on the head if it is thief related, any chance insurance may still cover it?

Remind me again beforehand. - Andy - 03-14-2005 Does it smoke all the time Jay, what color is it? In VTEC, honda's run rich, so black smoke will come out unless you have a hondata/vafc setup. 130k+ isn't all that much for a honda especially if you use synthetic. If you're losing .5 qts 500 miles, it may show up on your plugs. - ScottyB - 03-14-2005 Jay thinks there's a problem, but really, the smoke is just a result of the dragon spirit that envelops any honda during the mystical journey into v-tAk mode! - Mike - 03-14-2005 what is the honda doesn't have that mode? does a turtle spirit envelope it during the mystical journey into cantgofaster mode? - ScottyB - 03-14-2005 Mike Wrote:what is the honda doesn't have that mode? does a turtle spirit envelope it during the mystical journey into cantgofaster mode? non-vtEq hondas are infused with the indomitable spirit of the lemming, natures grade-F student. - Andy - 03-14-2005 ScottyB Wrote:Mike Wrote:what is the honda doesn't have that mode? does a turtle spirit envelope it during the mystical journey into cantgofaster mode? hahaha - Kaan - 03-14-2005 all Vtec motors smoke. Even the perfect, rebuilt, awesome Vtak motors blow smoke and burn oil. Oil preasure kicks Vtec in. that preausre floods the head and you have oil coming in via the valves. i would check the compression and stuff just to check the health of the motor... but i wouldnt worry! - white_2kgt - 03-14-2005 Kaan Wrote:all Vtec motors smoke. damn hondas! --chad - Mike - 03-14-2005 Kaan Wrote:all Vtec motors smoke. Convince them that the thieves fucked it up and you want compensation. To be honest, I did that once. When the supra got keyed, both of my rear tires blew out within two days of each other, about 3 weeks later. Insurance covered them as well based that apparently a tire can be cut without actually blowing out and that they had cut from the inside. I later figured out (when my next set of rears committed suicide) that my rear wheels leak a little since the chrome is flaking and that I just need to keep an eye on the air pressure. - Chris - 03-15-2005 yeah really- say the thieves drove it hard and it wasn't like that before. I wouldn't pay for anything knowning they prob did something to it. - Mike - 03-15-2005 i certainly wouldn't try to pull the wool over their eyes, as insurance fraud is a felony and costs us all money, but in this case i certainly think it's reasonable that the theives over-revved the car, causing damage. - Kaan - 03-15-2005 it might be a little much be it depends if you are on the highway with Vtak kicked in for the entire trip? RJ burnt more oil in his R than ever existed in the exxon valdiz. |
