The cost of repair and maintenance will likely be higher due to increased labor times... Also a lot of work done previously by owners may not be ideal with the mid engined layout.
For instance, the MR2 Spyder was damn near a backwards Corolla, but doing things like changing the coolant was a nightmare. Ever had to take 6 plugs out to drain the coolant and then try to bleed a system that runs from one end of the car to the other?
The layout just doesn't lend itself to easy repair and maintenance in my opinion, and I don't think it'll lend itself to the average owner doing even basic stuff like oil changes.
Maybe I'm just thinking about things wrong, it may be fine/affordable.
