That’s a load of sh*t. Sorry, give people real ways to know. There has to be guidelines or is this more “hey you can play on this but it’s not technically legal; so don’t mess it up and everyone looks the other way”.

Get on Google Maps and follow the forest road via GPS. If your little icon is off the legal forest road your ass is off-trail. That's pretty damn clear. 

If you want more "technical" documentation get familiar with the USDA MVUM (Motor Vehicle Use Map). This will tell you what are legally the roads you can access as well as other roads that rotate with seasons for hunting or fire fighting.

Example: Flagpole knob. If you're off dicking around anywhere but FR85A you're illegally off trail. 



Example 2: The hill climb everyone tears up at the Union Springs entrance. Is that Union Springs road? No. It's illegal.
