You just need to know. Remember that these are forest fire trails first and NOT trails for having fun on and it's easy to figure out what's legal and what isn't. If it's something that causes damage or worsens the trail conditions, it's probably not legal. Most every side trail that has whoops/bumps or hill climbs is off limits.

The way you know is go with someone experienced and listen to what they say.

Hey kids, love all the videos getting posted up on MM Youtubes. Let me give you a little bit of feedback on your recent Offroad Video. As it stands, the video footage you posted going through all the "mud pits" on Flagpole is considered "Off-trail" and illegal as defined by the Forest Service. I've had several encounters up there being followed by Game Wardens with verbal warnings that evening going through the pits to get to the other side is illegal. I know it's tempting to whip through there, but as a friendly ask for the wider 4x4 community, any publicly available footage of off-trail activities is the fastest way to closure of public lands and access for all. Please be mindful and cognizant of these activities in the future.

Unfortunately a lot of this falls on deaf ears for people getting out there their first few times. On recent trips I lead, it was hard to get people to not do stupid stuff and not tear up the land.

The trail network used to be huge about 10 years ago. It's been slowly and slowly disappearing as people go off-trail and abuse the land. I'm all for a little romp through some puddles, but technically all those mud pits up there are in fact off-trail and illegal.

It's weird that there aren't any signs posted that would let you know that those parts are off-trail.... can you link me to something that outlines what exactly is on trail and what is off?
