I don't think the average person realizes the cost per mile factoring in fuel, maintenance costs, insurance, wear and tear. They just see they drove for X hours and made x dollars and if the dollars per hour look good for them they think they are in the black.
I always ask the driver's how much they drive per day. I met a guy in San Diego that said he was making $4-5k a week but was doing 10-12 hour days and this was back when Uber first rolled out. He said with Lyft and the influx of drivers he makes drastically less now.
