Looks like the link in the OP got whored: http://chris.derecola.com/2013/03/a-pors...ily-again/
What's not written is my dad spends a vast portion of his retired life watching, buying, and selling 911 variants. In his search, this car popped up. It happened right around when the 911 market got ridiculous but high prices hadn't caught up with imperfect examples. This car was seen as a bastard because it was originally a 912 (they were still redheaded step children), an outlaw (it has parts from 911, 912, 924), and had the undesirable US impact bumpers. The previous owner had taken a 912 body, stripped it to the tub, fixed the rust, repainted with the factory color, put in a bunch of parts (including the 2.7L), and retitled it as a 911S. It was listed at $15,800 by a small classic car dealer in Ohio and my dad said if I didn't buy it, he would.
Sentimentally speaking, it's the replacement for my grandfather's factory original '67 911S.
He was big into the Porsche racing scene back in the 60-70s, but died when I was 13: http://chris.derecola.com/2008/07/where-i-get-it/
This is him in his Porsche Elva at Summit Point in the 70s.
That's a good read and cool website to get lost in, is it a blog of yours? Curious if the new owners of your grandfather's car have it all fixed and reliable now, or if that's too near impossible.
Also sounds like hell of a good deal so nice snag, I can see it going way up in the future when most "collector" examples are trashed, even if it is a 912 body.
That picture of Summit is crazy to look at...I can look at it and see myself on the other side of the wall organizing cars on grid and seeing cars that look nothing like #207 fly by. That's some awesome nostalgia.
