As I was removing the taillights I thought back to when I used silicone to seal my old Miata's lights instead of spending $20 and thought to myself "I'm lucky this car didn't have an owner like me!" ... Tug on the tail light but it seems to be frozen in place (it is below 10° wind chill!) Hit it with my hand and POP it comes out. This is the sight I see.

No wonder that side was leaking so bad. I tried to scrape some off but it is way too cold and I started to scratch the paint so I put the new seal on and tightened it down. I'm sure it's going to leak but there's nothing I can do until January as I'm leaving the car at JMU.

Does anyone have a good solution to removing the black stuff?

I have no solution for the black stuff. But if you are leaving the car at JMU over break and would rather keep it where it can be monitored, you are welcome to leave it at my house. We have extra parking, and that way its not sitting in a Campus Apartment lot un attended all the time. I'm off the beaten path a little, but not too far out of your way. Just thought I'd offer it up. It'd be a shame for the thing to get broken into or hit or something while you are gone.
