So, it's been three months. Dropped the motor off around the beginning of May and he's just starting to work on it, but to be fair, he told me it would be a while. Really the only game in town in terms of rebuilding ls motors in the area. Seems to know what he's doing and he comes pretty well recommended from some people I know in the area that has worked with him. This amount of time working with him is pretty standard apparently, so not too surprised.
Brakes and brake lines have been here for awhile, along with tires. Going with an LS7 clutch and flywheel upgrade since the tranny is out of the car. Also getting some work done on the driveshaft. No ETA on when this will all get back together, and the Xterra (thx Mom + Dad) I'm driving is ratted out, needs tires and a timing chain service done, among other things. BTW, did you know exhaust leaks suck on a tired motor at 4500ft? You were right to run away from the Xterra, Stephen.
So, going through some threads (looking at you, Justin) and seeing folks going through some similar issues, looks like I'm probably going to start shopping for a decent (and RELIABLE) AWD. The recent 4runner thread has inspired me a bit and the reliability sounds like heaven on earth compared to my poop of a situation (that I always seem to keep returning to, wonder why that is?). Toyota/honda CUV's seem interesting, but I want something decent in the snow and I don't think those will fit the bill. I'm more concerned with getting something that will last as the constant woman in my life, instead of swapping cars about every two years and dealing with the emotional highs and low's that seem to come from that. Current contenders are a newish 4runner, newish Foresters with a n/a motor or splurging a bit and going for an FJ. Just as long as I can get a kayak or ski box on it, comfortably and not worry about major issues. Surprisingly few options in terms of wanting something that's both offroad capable and with decent reliability ratings.
