My motor has the same problem with intake ports/valves getting gunked up since it uses direct injection. It also idles poorly in the cold so it's possible that is the cause (along with a whole other list of possibilities). I'll probably get around to cleaning them at some point in the spring. I'm sure it needs to be done either way.
