The depreciation argument makes a huge difference in how you're able to enjoy cars though. If you have the choice between two sports cars with similar performance/fun and one depreciates horribly, why wouldn't you go with the more financially sound option? In the case of the Jag, if you compared it to something like a new 911, the difference in depreciation over 3-5 years could be well over $10,000. With a used sports car the gap would be wider.
With cheaper cars it's not as big of a deal because you're not losing as much money in absolute terms but if you choose cars with better depreciation curves throughout your car-buying lifetime you're going to be able to enjoy the hobby more and won't have to deal with as much financial pain.
If you have money to burn then depreciation isn't a factor but I don't think any of us have a Scrooge McDuck money bin as of yet.
