There's "Durable" as in "Can drive it across WW1 battlefield trenches" and then there is "reliable" as in 'Won't leave me fucking stranded staring at a Check Engine Light'. German cars are ONE of those, but not the other.
Although, you're mostly correct. I think it really comes from racing. I mean think back to the Ur-Quattro days of audi, when they had Group B cars buzzing across the spanish countryside at 100+ mph...those things were (for the most part) rock solid. Then they stopped racing. Whups. Now you suck, Audi.
