My point is, count your blessings that you are getting free healthcare, because 98% of us aren't and a good portion of that are paying a LOT in premiums and out of pocket when they go to the hospital.
Just because nothing comes out of Derek's paycheck doesnt mean its "free"
It is part of Derek's compensation for his work, just like the money in his check, and it is safe to assume were there no health insurance included in his benefits, there would be more in his paycheck.
Working for yourself, or in a situation where you do not get employer subsidized healthcare, you are chosing to put yourself in a more agressive spot on the risk/reward curve. You have the potential to make a lot more money, but you give up the perks and security of working for a big company.
