yeah... the 401k went down over last year despite putting 10k in it.
on the other hand, i started playing with the market in november... i'm up 40% total on my investments there
unfortunately, i'm only dicking around with 5k (aside from what I have in AAPL, which isn't really dicking around, but what I thought was going to be a good long-term play), so the profit isn't too huge, but it's nothing to balk at.my picks:
SAY - picked up at 5 after they announced a wild buy of another company (was at 13 the day before), next day they retracted that statement, went to 9, sat around 9 for a few days, sold at 8.50. was just in for the quick buck.
UEPS - read a lot of good things about this company. thinking of holding for a while. bought at 9, now at 14. profitable, good business to be in.
FNXMF.PK - basically a nickel and silver mining company. those metals were way down. saw a nice jump the other day when nickel prices went up. their 52-high is something like 35, but i got in at 2. they're now at 3.50.
YGE - Solar panel parts manufacturer in China. Seems like a no-brainer to me. Solar stock recently took a MAJOR dump so this was cheap. They're #1 in China and add big new deals every few weeks... I think they're gonna be doing well for a while. Bought at 5, now at 7.50.
AAPL - I bought some just before the market crash, which hurt. I tripled up at 88. Trying to unload it all as soon as it makes financial sense. I think I need to accept loss...
Then there is SRZ, Caitlin's company. Was down to like .20 a few weeks ago, but I know what's going on there and it's ugly. Regardless, it's pretty stable around 1.60 right now. I wish I had thrown a few bucks in. DAMNIT.
I do most of my research via fool.com and invest with etrade.
