Depends on how, and how much you're using it. If you're riding it a few times a year, or just going down fire roads and the C&O canal, then a $400 bike will do just fine. If you're riding it more often on more technical terrain and crashing it a lot :lol: then a bike with a stronger frame and better components will be money well spent. I had a cheaper mtb a few years ago and I did nothing but tear that thing up. Replaced it with my Trek 8000 ($1200 new in '04) and have had very few problems with it.
