A blog is where I heard about it, but there are plenty of reputable news sources that confirm it.
There were a couple of Alaskan newspapers that covered it and USA Today even had an article about it at the time.

I think it does matter in the context of someone lying and possibly breaking the law in order to cover something up. Lest we forget Bill Clinton lied and tried to cover up an affair, and he got impeached. Granted he was under oath but if at all possible I think elected officials who break the law should not be in the White House.
