Nah, I kinda agree. I think all our kids should be bilingual in some way. Maybe it's my liberal eliteyness, but I place a great deal of value on being able to communicate effectively regardless of language barriers, and one of the best ways to learn that is to learn a non-native language. My kids will be bilingual (maybe even know more than 2). That's for sure.
As for Obama, I think that both of his arguments make sense. In a country that has such a large spanish speaking population, we should all be at least trying to learn some spanish... I've tried to (not in school). At the same time, when I visit a foreign country, I try to speak at least a few words in their language, but I know I'll always fall back to english at some point.
I guess I'm a bit biased here though...
