Yeah... it doesn't really make sense to me either since the stator should provide enough electricity to run the bike. I guess with all the other fancy stuff like lights and gauges it needs some juice?
Interestingly, I've heard both sides of this... Common wisdom is that a car won't run without a battery. I've *seen* track cars get bump started (no battery present) and run a full race.
Mayhaps once you add in those electricals that a race car doesn't have, you do need that extra bit of juice now and then? Same as on a bike? When my bike battery was dead, I couldn't roll-start it, but of course my bike isn't really a fair test.
