holy crap, well done Chad. if you can keep the tech-talk to a minimum (i won't understand it) you have got to tell this story.
i shoulda went with Pete's company but it was too late and i was about to graduate by then...
Stongeate had just been built when we moved in (we were in one of the first 4 buildings down by the road, the rest were still under construction). When I say, we, I mean me and 3 other CS majors. So being the cheap asses we were we got 1 network connection (in my name) and an 8port hub and 8 port switch. Using the switch and hub we hooked up about 14 computers to it with a Linux box as the 'router'. So to NTC they were giving us 1 IP with 1 computer on it, but we had many, many more behind it. We also ran a website off that linux box, <!-- w --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.ripoff-ntc.com">www.ripoff-ntc.com</a><!-- w --> that showed how to setup the configuration we were running, complete with scripts to configure it and network diagrams. Well, after 2 years  NTC caught on to the deal and threatened me with violations to their TOS (terms of service), going to sue me, get me kicked out of the apartment/school, bla, bla so I said hey, lets have a meeting and discuss this. So we did. I went down there with a copy of their TOS and a description of what we have done (complete with diagrams). Well they had printed off the entire website and said it was a violation of their TOS. I said prove it. Well they couldn't so his bitch ass wife just kept yelling at me. The 3 network techs in the back kept their mouth shut until about 45 later when I finally got tired of going back and forth with dick, dick's wife and the lawyers I point blank asked the network techs what had I done that violated the TOS, everyone looked at the head tech and he said, nothing. I picked up my shit, asked if we were done, dick said yes and I walked out. There was about 4 months left of school, never heard a peep out of them about it since, then the following year our rent went up and TV/Internet was included in the rent, funny part was it was actually a little cheaper for everyone who was already paying for 4 connections/apartment. lol
Oh we had Free HBO (they should put better locks on the wiring closets) and were running a file server off the linux box as well and doing advertising for this insideguide webiste that paid us per click. We had an IRC channel running that had a list of files, people requested a file, it opened the ad page in their webbrowser then served up the file, we made about $200-$300/month off that little scheme
They never said anything about that though, mostly b/c we never talked about, this is probably the first time I've ever put that story in print...
