In board brakes are a pretty good idea in terms of removing unsprung weight. I guess the wheel probably protects the rotor from road debris so that's probably why it's more popular.

i think cooling is more important. inboard brakes would protect the rotors better which is why a lot of military vehicles have inboard brakes. but i dont think road debris is nearly as big a problem as keeping brakes cool which is why i think most cars today use outboard brakes
