You already know all of this, but oh well. Being conscious of how heavy cars are in our present day is something that is way far back in auto manufacturers mind. The people with the money now are baby boomers and young professionals. They want comfort, smoothness, safety features, and luxury. There are very few that perfer the raw handling of vehicles that we like and prefer, thus bigger, heavier, more technologically advanced engines are required to pull heavier chassises, and thus even the smallest, most compact BMW will tip the scales at something way more than the beautifulness that was the E30 M3. Nostalgia really.
