As Chan said, what you posted is a E46 "Compact". We got the E36 Compact in the 318ti, which sold like shit here and more than likely is the primary influence for not bringing the 1 series here.
It speaks volumes about the 1 series that its the third best selling BMW without being sold in BMW's (and the World's) largest auto market.
