Fair enough... although everything I say should be assumed as sarcasm unless otherwise noted.
He said AS suck so based on the Tirerack rating, they suck less than his. I'm not elitest enough to actually think his tires just plain suck.

Michlen XGT4 AS - $130/ea (way back when)
vs
Kumho Ecsta 712 - $52/ea (way back when)
(3 sets of the 712's as well) and they were much better performing in every way other than snow and treadlife. They were about equal in the snow and treadlife.
FWIW, the XGT4 were the "entry-level" AS Michelin tire. You're right about the pricing, in that case you are paying for, but I'm not sure I agree those tires are even a valid comparison because they don't make them any more. You'll notice I said AS of today... as I think they've made dramtic improvements over dry performance and tread life over the last 5 years. Having no experience with the newest version of the XGT (Z)4 I can only say that it rates on par with the Kumhos.
Anecdotally, my mom had Pilot Sport (non-AS) on her V8 A6 and slid right though a stop sign in a half inch of snow so not all summer tires perform "good enough" in wintry conditions.

My last two cars I've bought in what I consider the "moderate usage" stage of it's life so I've ended up replacing the OEMs on both. I never seem to keep the car long enough to use up what I buy though.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
