Is anyone really surprised though? The BMW nostrils are back with a vengeance.
Oh, the humanity! Wait, what don't we like?

The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
The final form of the BMW mega grill:
I was thinking maybe it would be limited to the 4 series, but it's looking like both the M3 and M4 will get it. On the bright side, people who can't stomach the typical M3/M4 sticker price might be able to score some bitching discounts.

I don't mind the big grill, but I don't like the way it appears to go above the hood line. Aside from those two arches, it's not that different than Audi. Do you really believe it'll impact price??

I like this better than the concept. Tall and skinny or short and wide. Just not tall and wide like the X5.
They used to be really tall and skinny way way way back. We'll get used to it I'm sure.

I think Audi's execution works because it doesn't end up looking like giant pig's nostrils. I think this looks worse than Lexus's spindle grill, which has materially affected their sales.
As far as it impacting price, the M3/M4 is already a bit too expensive for the performance it delivers vis a vis the competition. With an in-your-face ugly grill, I imagine it's going to stop a number of would be buyers in their tracks, and they're gonna have to get to discounting. I think they may try to stop the bleeding with an aggressive lease offer, but I'm willing to bet you'll be able to get a new M3/M4 at a discount when they hit the dealerships and sit for awhile.
No exaggeration, this is the worst looking M3 ever.

Does BMW even make money on M cars compared to pumping out lower trims with M badges slapped on?

There's M cars everywhere. Of course they make a profit on them.
2019 Accord Sport 2.0 A/T
2012 Civic Si - Sold
For the same reason people don't care about $ to HP ratio, they aren't gonna care about this grille. You buy an M cause you want an M. It has very little to do with things car people nitpick over. I feel like the M4 is a bigger bastardization ofthe name than anything this grill can do... but they sell.

I'm a bit over BMW at this point, the best new one you can buy is called a Toyota and the rest have kinda gone off the rails.

That's the thing, non-car people care about looks. Car people get spun up over things like M-Sport BMW's and turbo vs n/a. Those things are invisible to the average customer.
But an ugly car absolutely turns off average buyers. Some people will buy it for the M badge anyway, but the M badge is not nearly so strong a brand that it will make people ignore an in-your-face ugly grill. If it was a prancing horse badge or raging bull badge, ok. But an M on the trunk is not gonna get someone in any doors that would otherwise be closed. At least not in any major metro area.
And like I said, M cars are already a bit overpriced as is. BMW already failed hard on the CS and GTS trims, and both of those are decent looking but overpriced cars. Now BMW wants people to buy these pig-faced M-cars with a middling performance/dollar ratio, and I just don't think they're going to do too well there.

I think you just repeated the same points as earlier? Ratios don't even matter to me, let alone anyone but about 17 bloggers in the world. If ugly cars turned off buyers, the Pontiac Aztec would have never seen the light of day. Remember when we all hated the new Surpa and then it went on selling? I'm just not seeing people give that much of a shit.
Care to make a wager on the sales figures or price of the car? It'll make me being wrong interesting, at least.

A car being ugly doesn't mean no one will buy it, just that less people will buy it. In some cases that means that they don't sell enough to justify continuing production, on the other end it just means that they don't sell as many units as they otherwise would have. If M3/M4 sales are terribad I have to think BMW will just release an updated front end, rather than drag things out for the full 4 year lifecycle. They could also just stop selling the G80 M3/M4 early.
Quote:Care to make a wager on the sales figures or price of the car? It'll make me being wrong interesting, at least.
BMW doesn't publish detailed breakouts of their sales by model or trim so there's no way to know how many units of the M3/M4 got sold.
I don't know if BMW NA will advertise discounts on M3's nationally, but I think in the first few months of the new M3 being on sale there'll be discounts to be had once cars have been sitting for awhile. Then we'll see if BMW tries to prop up sales with lease deals. Typically M car lease deals don't come out until the end of a generation.

Biggest thing for me is that the kidneys have to be separated. These modern ones are merged together and it isnt the staple bmw look. They can be big if they are separated and dont fold with the hood. 3 series on sale now is not a looker in the grill department.
