If i buy an F31 its getting the longest warranty I can buy.  The $2500 in repairs this year would have paid for most of a warranty.

Ooooof

You know how much my repairs were on the Jag, other than pothole-related damage?  $0

Same for all my German cars. Yay anecdotes!

You sold your yellow S4 at the very first out of warranty repair.

I think my choices are boiled down to a CPO F31 or a 2019 Alltrack SEL. Both have pros & cons and it may take a while to sell the E91, I'm not going to dump it. Maybe someone will plow into it for me.

Nope. I sold it as soon as the warranty expired because owning a B5 S4 without a warranty is stupider than whacking yourself in the dick with a rusty shovel.

I don't really have any plans to unload the F31 when the warranty expires next year because I like it so much... but we all know that's probably a lie.

The SEL gets the nicer seats and interior appointments so its something I can live with, plus APR now has some nice tunes and the GTI turbo bolts up for a +100hp & +100 ft-lbs bump.  Yes, I'm aware I'm advocating buying a brand new car and modifying it, get the fuck off my lawn.

The steering still sucks but changing tires and some swaybars can go a long way to helping that out.

This is how addicted the man is to a third pedal. A manual turd is better than an auto.

buys new car for reliability and warranty. tunes it and potentially voids said warranty :-P

i like the idea for the Alltrack SEL solely for the fact that VW now offers a top trim wagon with a manual transmission as an option (new for 2019). I wonder what even Alissa's sportwagen would feel with a manual because i don't think it's all that bad to drive. The SEL has all the right options for comfort and usability and they're usually discounted a fair amount from VW's MSRP.

i like the IDEA of the Alltrack...but i don't think its going to be more than the sum of its parts. i hope i'd be wrong about that though.

turbo swaps, tunes, etc...that's starting to be a lot of money and bullshit to fix your wagon obsession and still row a shifter.

just get a ridgeline and a 911 and get on with it.

Yeah, and it's way better than a fucking VW All Track garbage wagon that he immediately needs to dump $5k into to make it his dream wagon. I'm just here to suggest buying a reliable car with a 3rd pedal that he has already expressed interest in.

But we all know he is going to go full retard anyway.

You got me there. Let's just all agree that whatever option he chooses will be the worst one.  Big Grin

I expected nothing less, with friends like these who needs enemies? A dream wagon is a B7 RS4 Avant but its never happening so that's OK.

SEL VW's are nice place to spend time in these days, and if $3k makes the difference between really enjoying it and not that's a no brainer (while we're still DINK...) and car modification is an incurable terminal disease. I really do enjoy and dont mind driving mostly because I dont have to do it and I need to remember that when it comes to car projects. The big appeal to this one is that is a nice car that ticks most of the boxes thats brand new, vs. the F31 which would be CPO. Although if I find a nice 30-40k mile car w/ 100k warranty I'd be pretty comfortable.

Honest question, whats the point of a manual if the car handles like ass? To me a manual is one cog in the overall driving experience, and in sum total, a better handling car that shifts itself is better than a shit handling lard-barge with a clutch pedal.

if we're already going down the rabbit hole...

does the turbo swap include the cost of an upgraded clutch? the GTI's turn the friction disc to dust with a tune, will this do the same?

how is the rest of the driveline, will it handle 80% more power or will it do a WRX and shred gearsets? no limited slips i'm sure, so with that power you're still going to pegleg the front tire on slippery stuff, or at best overpower the elec brake distribution/traction control.

i also assume the turbo swap means intercooler swap/new fuel pump + injectors, downpipe/exhaust, etc...

i know you know your way around a car, but you know as well as i do that modern German cars don't F around when it comes to slicing and dicing parts. you're one unhappy sensor away from an inoperable, warranty-voided brand new driveway ornament. and this car is new enough that you ARE going to be the beta tester for a turbo swap kit.

Ninja edit: to make more sense, maybe. I'm tired. Buy a 911.

Tough love: soon enough you're going to have spent getting on near or above the cost of a 911 (depending on model) chasing the perfect wagon.  I think we're 2 wagons into a healthy chunk of a 997 and talking here of getting a damn sight near a nice 993 with a new VW wagon purchase.  A minty 996 was maybe a little ways back.  If we include the 135, you're def within spittin' distance of a 911.

I second the Ridgeline + 911, or whatever daily beater with a stick + P car.  Hell, manual swap a Sportcross IS:

We need to break the cycle of these wagons doing you dirty.  And make your 911 dream real.  Pls.

APR+ Tunes come with an APR warranty. Only catch is they require you get a new clutch/flywheel for the warranty to be valid and you need to take it to a dealer that partners with APR, which is like an hour from Nova, I believe.

At least this is what I gleaned from listening to Joey when I bought his mk7.5

Yeah but that's just the tune. Nobodies warrantying a turbo swap. That's the big reason why this is absurd on a new car let alone one you're not already in love with

Honest question,   whats the point of a manual if the car handles like ass?

Nope and thats why I didnt buy one last year and why I'd probably buy an F31 when it comes time to put my money where my keyboard is. Edit - this was also when we were 100% committed to going down to one car and I didnt want it as the only car. Adding a second car into the equation would change my answer.

I got the E91 back and damn if it doesnt drive nice when everything is working and I'm really satisfied with the changes I've made to it. He only beats me because he loves me, of course.

Alternate course of action: Keep the wagon and buy a 2nd car with a warranty like a new GTI so that when the wagon breaks I can fix it at my leisure for cheap. Or buy the Alltrack and let my wife drive it and dont fucking mod it and buy myself a S550 mustang because v8 makes all things right in the world.
