Thanks pete, I appreciate that. If I have to drive to Roanoke, I'd like to use something smaller than a full size ford, just to save on gas. I mean, the engine's really not that heavy, and once I get the thing into the truckbed, I can use my chain hoist to remove it.
I'm hoping I can get it shipped to waynesboro, and then pick it up with the (green) Metro, which now has a trailer hitch.
If not, I'll see what I can do. I'll get it here. If I have to push it in a wheelbarrow from Colonial Avenue, Roanoke.
I sat in the Supra again today. Made "vrmm vrmm" noises and shifted gears.

Man, I used to do that all the time in the XR (er, um still do..). My "then fianc├®" used to think I was crazy. Many would probably support that argument... but anyhow, good to know I'm not alone in this crazy world!

Ok, here's the scoop.
There was miscommunication, screw-ups, misunderstandings and non-existant places.
The reality is that the engine is in Roanoke, and it's not moving until I either go pick it up, or have it delivered to a business address. I'm working on some business addresses, but does anyone know where i can have an engine dropped off?
Anyway. Vicki from Venus-Auto was very nice, and very apologetic. It's basically the shipping company's fault for having inaccurate information in their database.
Hell, maybe I should just go get the stupid thing. It's only 2 hours away.

2hrs ain't that bad and it might be worth it to just get the damn thing. I'd opt for that.
You can do that in one day, having it shipped could take nearly a week again.

Well the engine should be on its way, or at least closer to it. We have a business addy from one of the guys at the church, so it should be here asap.

The engine has arrived. The coilpacks look in excellent shape, much better than the ones I have. That's my money right there. So I'm gonna figure out some way to bolt it to my engine stand to disassemble it.

So, tonight I decided i'd remove the head from my long block, to send it off to be worked. Figured it'd take 20 minutes tops since, after all, the MKIII's original head bolts came off with a ratchet.
Boy, was I wrong.
Ok, so to begin with, on the original head we used a hex key to remove the head bolts. The head bolts aren't hex, they're Torx. Secondly, it took me, my father, my father's knee, an impact socket, and an enormous breaker bar to break them loose.
Many of you have never met my father. Before he became a Pastor, he was a diesel mechanic. He has an inch drive socket set. He has arms the size of small trees. After he was a deisel mechanic, he was an industrial electrician, and then he *taught* deisel mechanics. The man has arms that look like they could crush your head like an orange. He's like Thor with a beard. Enormous. He can break things loose with his fingers that take Dave and I a ratchet to break loose.
Anyway, he struggled with these head bolts.
So all of them except for one (that's 13 of 'em) came out with relatively little drama. I mean, sure, we snapped the Ampro socket that came with the Torx bit, and we shattered my 10MM six point Craftsman that replaced it, but hey, can't make an omellette without breaking some eggs. But the 14th one? We stripped it. Whoo-hoo! Fun times! So how the hell are we supposed to get the head out now?
Get the drill.
So dad's korean drill bit does OK for a while. We sharpen it 3 times. The fourth time, dad says it's no good to try and sharpen it again, but I just happen to have a 14MM made-in-America drill bit from Solenbergers. It's a little big, but after some acrid smoke, alot of metal shavings, and me practically peeing myself with fear that something terrible was going to happen.
But nothing did. The head came off, and now there's a headless bolt sitting out of the block. But all's well in SupraLand.
So, here's what needs to be done:
- Send the "new" head to Carquest. This one ought not be warped.
- Sort out the wiring harness. I've identified the wires for the tach and temp gauges. Now to run them out, make sure they're fitted.
- Replace the valve stem seals.
- Get the toyota oil filter bracket bolt that allows me to run an oil pressure or temp gauge without tapping anything. Tapping blocks frightens me.
- Build my Y-Pipe and exhaust. The stock y-pipe has maybe 2 inches of clearance, tops, to feed both turbos. So I'm building a set of divorced pipes for the outlets and wastegates. It should flow worlds better and even though I'll be forced to part with my Greddy downpipe, it'll be alot better in the long run.
- Build an intake, box, and hood scoop. Both turbos feed from a common pipe. This would be necessary if I had a MAFS. But I don't. I have a MAP sensor and temp sensor. So, I see no reason to make both turbos fight each other to breath. Each turbo will have it's own filter inside a metal airbox fed by a hood scoop. Which will be sexy.
- Put it all together and turn the key.
Anyway. So, yeah.

Typically, if we are having a hard time with something, his dad will come into the garage and watch us. Just by his mere presence the problem is typically solved. I think it is because the problem gets scared and doesn't want to get its ass handed to it, so it decides to go easy with us; others have thier own theories.
The head is on my passenger seat, awaiting a new body. It's purdy. By the looks of the block that it came off of I don't think there's any warping.... it was more of a grenading type of failure.
I can't wait to see it turn over!

Sean and I tore into the harness today, in other news. Not a single wire (not one) was soldered. The were all, down to the last wire, twisted and electrical taped. He even used some of the shielding on the shielded wire as a goddamned ground. It's a wonder it ran at all.
Soooooooooooo....
*sings*
It's into the harness I go, I go.
Because it's a peice of shit, oh no!
To do what should have been done,
if only "the guy" would had one,
brain in his head,
I wish he were dead,
But now it's too late,
It's all on myyy plaaaaaaate....
It's into the harness I go!
Pictures of this rat's nest to forthcoming.

wish I could claim being that retard, but anybody that has ever watched me do electrical knows that I solder the shit out of everything and then either shrink-tube it or give it a good taping. I'll give you the guy's email that I bought the engine from and you can send him a pic with "WTF?" as the title.
Dave, didnt you pay someone to make that harness?

my little excursion to Chicago I came back in my rental minivan with an engine, trannny, intercooler, harness (already lengthened), ECU, and a few other tidbits. I just took it and pretty much threw it in, since he promised it was ready to go.
McMaster-Carr ownz me.
Well, after calling everyone in the phone book and noone being able to order me a *roll* of shrink tubing, I decided to check and see what McMaster had for me.
What they had was 200 feet of stranded, oil and coolant resistant 16G wire and as much shrink tubing as I wanted in whatever size my little heart desired. So I went to radio shack and bought an automatic wire stripper, identical to the one which dad swore he had around the shop somewhere, if only he knew where. Whatever dad, I'd rather have my own.
I ordered it tuesday evening and it arrived this morning. So I guess I'll spend all of my spring break soldering. I also finally found a machine shop who wouldn't charge me 8 million dollars to mill an edge on this block of steel I have. They're a little backed up, but I should have it before the end of next week. So now it's a question of replacing valve stem seals, getting my harness done, checking my block, putting everything back together, and then figuring out what I did wrong.
