Tell me about Fox Bodies
#1
I think fox bodies are kind of cool, and I might not replace the E46 with a Miata after remembering how cramped I am in one after driving some German Engineering for months.

Someone educate me on them please. I like the face lifted ones, but I've heard that the fuel injected motors are more difficult. Is it worth even looking at one? I've never driven a mustang so I don't know really what to expect, but I think it'd be super cool to get one and just make it loud and obnoxious to drive around campus for my senior year. Just some thoughts.

I know I could just google this, but I'd rather hear it from y'all.

What? I can't hear you over my fox body. I figure whatever you said wasn't important, being as I couldn't hear it.

Don't worry about Jon, he's allergic to torque and fun.

What do you want to know specifically?

The aero fox Mustangs ('87-'93) with the fuel injected 302 are a good platform to build upon. Completely stock they don't particularly do any one thing extremely well (except burnouts) and unquestionably their weakest link is the braking system.

If I buy one, what am I immediately replacing? Common problems. Is there that ONE repair that every fox body owner loathes?

This one really depends on the car. Was it meticulously maintained from day one, or was the oil changed every 5 years? The engines in these cars will go 250K miles with simple routine maintenance.

Heater core replacements are a H U G E pain in the ass if the car has factory installed A/C. I think most labor books quote around 6-7 hours to replace one. You essentially have to remove the whole front cabin of the cars interior (dash, console, seats) to access the heater core on an A/C car. If the car was a factory A/C delete car it might take you 45 mins as there really isn't a HVAC heater box...just the heater core bolted to the inside of the firewall immediately behind the glove box door. Remove the glove box door...boom there's the heater core.

Rust will be your biggest hurdle with these cars, the newest example now being 23 years old.

My thought - you are seemingly dumping a car because it is experiencing common maintenance issues and planning on replacing it with something older that will likely have way more issues...
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

your joints, as you slowly destroy yourself climbing all over it to replace stuff that's a quarter century old in something that tends to get driven like a stunt car.

the good news is that out of the box, it'll drive just like your tacoma but with worse brakes

That's why I'm asking these questions. Thanks guys. I'm just testing the waters because I don't want to be 100% miata without thinking of other choices. Driving the e46 made me appreciate all of the interior space I've been missing with all of the vehicles I have owned.

Just wondering, how much are you looking to spend? Plan on $7K-$9K to avoid rusty, million mile, hacked up, beat to death rattle traps.

+1.

Ignoring wear items and maintenance on an old Toyota works because it's, you know, a Toyota built when they gave a shit.

Ignoring wear items and maintenance on anything else will not turn out so well. Nothing you've mentioned with the BMW has been a big issue IMO,

You're basically going to be trading a dog shit sandwich for a cat shit sandwich with whatever else you buy that's legally old enough to buy pornography and/or drink moonshine. Might be more "your taste" but at the end of the day, the work it will need is going to be a different flavor of shit compared to BMW shit or old-ragged-out Miata shit.

I know nothing about Fox bodies and I like them enough with the right wheels and exhausts and stuff, but much like I went  at "the CSB is toasted ugh I don't care fuck this car I won't even do the repair properly my god BMW is a bunch of dickholes" I will similarly  at whatever maintenance a Fox body requires that you want to avoid doing.

I know you're tired of hearing it, or maybe you just don't want to. It seems pretty clear at this point that you have neither A: the funds to buy something that will be fun and require little to no effort to upkeep and B: the time to work on something that is fun, you can afford but will require the upkeep. I won't pretend to know your financial state, but it seems that way to me.

I currently don't even have a car, which is due to a mixture of I don't need one since I am in a city but mostly due to the fact that it just doesn't make any financial sense right now since i can't afford anything that would be "fun." It sucks, a lot. I drive my fiance's Mazda 3 which makes me want to shoot myself in nearly ever facet aside from the occasional fun moments in turns. I know however that waiting up and saving will pay dividends in the end, which may just be what you have to do. At least you have the truck. It'll suck but it will be way worth it in the end. Plus, didn't you just post the other day you hate working so much and missing out on going out? Maybe save some of what your spending on the car now and use the other portion to go out a bit a more? May soften the blow of not having a "fun" car to drive.

End of the day it's obviously your call, just giving my two cents. Just seems you're stressing yourself out for not much reward when you can achieve that later.

Well, this took a turn I should have expected. I just wanted some info on mustangs Big Grin

Yeah, I hear all of y'all and trust me, I think about it a lot and it's all up here in my head. I go back and forth between keeping this E46, buying a Miata, or just selling it all and finishing my truck and coasting through senior year. I'm just trying to get all of the information from every side to see what I can swing.

I really just want a car because my truck absolutely destroys my back. I have back problems and I didn't realize how stiff the OME leaves on my truck would be. I also can't justify wheeling or doing anything to my truck without a second car because I can't afford to not be able to drive for more than a day.

Do this.

If you must get a second car, go buy an integra.

But it hurts his back because he modified if for wheeling, which he won't do, because he might break it and can't afford to have it down.

Clearly the correct solution is to spend all of his liquid cash so that he can have another vehicle and continue being too scared to use either vehicle as intended, because he can't afford to repair them.

That's a very valid point, Joey. I think the best solution is to buy a cheap beater civic so I can satisfy my fetish of having two cars and I can drive to class and not worry about having to take my CB whip off and blah blah blah, everything I've talked about.
