I'd at least have a look at the Guibo before deciding to not replace it. If you see any cracked rubber, I'd go ahead and get it. It took me awhile figure this out, but OE parts or bust for me. I've had too many off-brand or even "OEM" things fail. Unless you know which brand makes the BMW part and can get it without the BMW logo for a few bucks cheaper, I recommend OE only (unless you're gonna unload the car soon).

Taylor - get under there and look at the guibo/flex disc before you order parts. There's a good chance it's okay and you can save $50 or so.

I... uh... Found an oil leak. Also, Guibo looks good from what I can tell. I have every bolt cracked on the exhaust and heat shield except for the ones behind the o2 sensor. They look pretty FUBAR'd. They've been soaking in Liquid wrench for about 12 hours and I blasted them again just now. I get out of class at 2, so hopefully I can get those bolts off and get someone's help holding the exhaust and driveshaft out. Props to BMW for making at least that part pretty easy.

Can anyone tell me what this leak could be from? The bell housing isn't AS wet as all of the parts behind it, but it's a silly amount of oil on the brace going across and the driveshaft. Rear main? Oil pan?

That's a big ol' leak. Aside from the obvious "it's probably blowing back onto all that stuff as you drive" - does it leave spots overnight?

No, it has never left a spot anywhere that I've seen. That's what is weird.

my xterra had a leaking oil pan seal and dripped almost nothing but whenever we drove around it would coat the bellhousing and transmission, which made it hard to pinpoint what was leaking for a while.

i was 99% sure it was a rear main but in the end it turned out to be the pan, and every time we were driving just the oil sloshing around and oil vapor pushing against the seal was enough to send an oil trail up onto the engine/tranny. i imagine if i wanted we could have ignored it for another couple years....it looked like a lot of oil but it barely registered on the dipstick.

Nope, just a solid rubber bushing

My guess is oil pan... it's honestly not a bad job to do on jackstands, contrary to what a lot of the internets will have you believe.

Or just sell the car as soon as I get this fixed? I think that's it. I don't know how I didn't notice, but with it on Jackstands, I realized the RR tire was completely bald in one spot. Not like low, but completely abso-fucking-lutely bald. Those rear bushing are wreaking havoc.

With the help of Matthew, Chip, and Lucy, we got the driveshaft out and the car back on the ground, so Copper won't know any better about us working on it. The CSB seems to be bad. It spins pretty freely with little resistance and makes a little noise. The bushing around it isn't too bad either but shows wear. The Guibo looks fantastic and nothing else seems suspect. So I've ordered the CSB from Pelican Parts and it will be at my house in Lynchburg next week during break. Looks like I have to drive my truck home for spring break :/

Hmm. Little surprised to be honest. The rubber bushing on mine was completely torn through and didn't sound half as bad as you described yours but it's still probably the culprit.

Wow yeah, I figured the rubber around the CSB would be gone, going by the sound you described.

Oil leak is funky, too. Weird that it's be so much that it's to all the way down the transmission but never leave a spot on the ground. Sure it's engine oil and not from the transmission?

Is it possible to just saw through the "outer" ring on the RTAB's and hammer them out so you can throw some urethane ones in? Just trying to get out of needing to rent the special tool.
