"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. I've got this coin, right? And I thought about selling it (since gold is through the fucking roof wtf.) and buying some stocks. Maybe something dividend-y. Thoughts?

Ok so forget the gold. I'm thinking about dipping my toe into this, what good advice for a total n00b? Someone hold my hand here.

I wish I could tell ya. I know just enough to know I shouldn't be giving anyone advice.

My advice is to get a professional financial advisor, unless you do a ton of research and like to gamble (which is essentially what flipping stocks is).

The mutual fund + investment portfolio my brother set up for me is up 10.5% since I liquidated all of my blue chips stocks and dumped the funds into it. It has already paid back the cap gains in the 5-6 months since I made the change. He also took a look at my company Roth 401k funds and made recommendations on the %'s I should invest in each fund...that is also now up 10+%

There's a big difference between investing for the long term and trying to make some money in the market. A financial advisor is good for the former, but is overkill for the latter. My advice for messing around in market is to read, read, read. You really need to get a sense of popular opinion and understand the best ways to hedge yourself against making stupid investments and losing a shit ton. I think the best way for a noob to get into it is to start reading a bunch of "common man" financial websites to get comfortable with what people are talking about. You have to build context because without it you are going to end up chasing and losing money because you're doing what everyone else is a few days/weeks/months late.

Why not just gamble on sports under the table then? You don't have to get taxed on your gains Tongue

I'd personally rather go to Vegas or throw some money down on a horse race than play around with boring stocks.

AOL's deal with Microsoft to sell a majority of our patents went through over the weekend, resulting in this craziness when the markets opened this morning. (As of 2 PM its up 46% for the day)

I wouldn't have thought this would have such a positive impact with the public, but I guess cash is cash....

Instagram is worth 800 AOL patents

(I stole that from a friend that still works at AOL.)
