New to MM: Bobby W.
#1
Hey Everyone! My name is Bobby and I'm a sophomore Finance Major here at JMU. Didn't know about MM until late Spring my Freshman year and knew it was something I wanted to be a part of! Seems like a great group of people and I'm excited to be a part of the club. I'm really hoping to learn a lot more about all different car platforms.

My previous car was a 2006 Infiniti G35 Coupe and I loved it. I starting modding it right when I got it and starting saving all my money for future plans. I started with basic bolt ons, then some exterior parts, and then more audio components. I had a lot planned for the car until I got in a bad accident in November with a deer driving South on 81. It was about 1230-1am and a deer jumped out 10 ft in front of me while I was going about 75mph. I slammed on the brakes and nailed it. My whole front end was all messed up and the car was pretty banged up (mainly cosmetic damages though). Airbags deployed and everything but I was fine. The deer wasn't so lucky (his guts and blood were all over my car).

The insurance company decided to fix it for some reason (they admitted later they should've totaled it) but I knew I wanted to sell it and move on to something different. I wanted something that could hold down some more power and something bigger so I could actually fit passengers. I'm 6'5" so it was tough riding in the G. I had the seat leaned pretty far back to fit...lol. It had two seats in the back that could fit little kids and thats about it...lol. So four doors was a must for my next car.

I knew I wanted something four doors and fun to mod, which led me to my current love, my 2008 WW Mitsubishi Evo X GSR. I wanted one for a while, even when I had my G35, and I came across a great deal on a used one with all the options I wanted with only 12,800 miles. So I couldn't be happier. It's my first manual car so the first two days were rough but now I pretty much got the hang of it (or at least I'd like to think so... lol). I couldn't be happier with the car and it makes some good power and the all wheel drive is amazing. I can't wait to see what it can do in the snow. It had some performance mods already installed and I've only done a few cosmetic things since I purchased it this summer. It came with an Invidia Q300 exhaust, Injen intake & UICP, HKS Blow off valve, and a tune (running 20 psi). I wish I knew more about the tune but I bought it from a small dealer and they wouldn't allow me to contact the previous owner and they didn't know. It also came with an AEM tru boost gauge, and HKS turbo timer. Since then I debadged it, installed some Rally Armor mudflaps, CF Vortex Generator, and CF Kansai side spats. Love the way the car looks now. Next on the list is a mild drop and some new wheels; probably wait til after winter.

I plan to have this car for a while and want to continue modding and learning more about this platform. I hope to get it on the track sometime this year and see what it can do. I've never participated in any track event so it'll be interesting to get out there. I'm hoping to learn a lot from you guys here at MM and am excited for this year!

Sorry for the long thread but for some reason I couldn't stop typing. haha.

Here are some pics (Thanks Matt for the tip on how to post!). They're cell phone pics so nothing fancy...haha.

Glad you finally made it on here, I was starting to get worried that you would never get through the approval process. Not sure how soon you want to get on track but a hyperdrive at VIR event in two weeks might be just what you need. I know that's pretty soon and there will be plenty more of them next season.

To post pictures, the easiest way I found was to right click on a FB pic and click properties and then copy the image url and paste it into an which pops up if you click image while posting. Paste link in place of dots.

Anyway, glad you finally made it through and hope to see ya soon man

Yeah I finally got the email that I was approved last night. I will definitely look into the Hyperdrive, that is pretty soon but from the video we watched in the first meeting, a hyperdrive looks like a great event to start out with. I will try the facebook thing for the pictures now. Thanks for the suggestion Matt!

Was just reading and it might be too late for this hyperdrive but hopefully Jake will chime in. I noticed their website said you need to register 10 days out which we just passed tonight. Not sure if this applies for hyperdrives.

Calling on Jake or someone who has done a Hyperdrive

See you got the pics working, the G35 looks clean. The Evo X is just

Welcome to MM! That G was pretty. Nice color. I dig the Evo, too... there's a guy at work here who has a white Evo IX.

And yes, you should come down for a Hyperdrive + related shenanigans at VIR in a few weeks! It's definitely worth the drive and you will be hooked! Look, I'll even put the registration link right here so you can click it very easily to sign up.

Yeah I loved my G! It was unfortunate but thankfully I'm alright and the G has a nice new owner so it's doing well.. haha.

Yeah I originally wanted a black G but I had like 5 friends with black cars so I knew I should do something different. That blue (Lakeshore Slate) was just a rare color and I loved it. I love Evo IX too, one of my friends has a grey one and it's so much fun!

As far as the Hyperdrive at VIR, I have to see if I have anything going on. It is pretty soon to start racing for me, I'd like to get some ride alongs and learn how to properly drive the courses before going out there and taking the chance of screwing something up.

Not a Race........

Hyperdrives are exactly what you want to do, to "Learn how to properly drive the courses". No balls to the wall driving, simply hop in the car, strap on a helmet, and an instructor rides with you giving you pointers for 1, 20-25 minute session.

Your not just let out on course and smacked on the ass, then told to "go get em".

For $50, you cant really get any better instruction for cheaper, aside from an AutoX.

Welcome to the club!

But seriously, I have a question.

What the hell do you kids do to get these cars? When I was a sophomore in college, yes, I was driving a DSM, but I only paid 3500 bucks for it and couldn't afford any mods.

I mean, no offense but Bobby are you a manho?

Truth. Nobody wins the hyperdrive Wink Hyperdrives lead to HPDE which stands for High Performance Driver Education. Yes, there's a checkered flag but it just means your session is over...

It's the best way to learn. One classroom session and one track session to get your feet wet. And I'd say it's almost better than an autocross for constant learning opportunities, because things come at you a bit slower, and you have the ability to process what you did well and not-as-well lap to lap with your instructor (OK, turn 3 was bad because of X, let's try this next time around). You have an earpiece and mic so you two can talk the entire time. I was nervous going out for my first (in a friend's car, even) but had constant chatter in my right ear to talk me through everything if I needed it.

Also - HPDE 4 is the instructor group. MM has some alums who instruct (and the non-MMers are really friendly too) and if there is a DE4 group driving before your hyperdrive, you can get a ride with someone so you see the track at speed before you go out.

And +1 to Rexy's question... I managed to pull a small loan from the Bank Of Dad to get the Miata, and paid it off relatively quickly. It was $5300 and I overpaid. Whoops, live and learn. We aren't calling you in particular out here, but I'm genuinely curious as several newbs have some pretty sweet (newish) rides. Some dealer out there offering 0% for 8679325 months?

+1 to this. My dad won't even let me sell the car he gave me let alone loan me money for some racecar Sad Don't mind me, I'm just bitter I have to drive an accord until it explodes (which may be soon as the transmission fluid hasn't been changed in 75,000+ miles and isn't getting changed)

Well thats good to know for the Hyperdrive. How many Hyperdrives are there throughout the year? That sounds like a very helpful event, having the instructor with you the whole time. And I would definitely want to do a ride along before going out there. This event is next weekend?

And to answer the question, I did do some part time stripping over the summer which made me some serious cash. Haha jk. I just saved my money growing up and worked and saved and when it came time to buy my first car I was extremely lucky and my parents' helped pay. They said they would match whatever amount I could pay but that didn't happen because I had expensive taste and they were extremely loving and still hooked me up. So they paid a little more than half for my G. As for the Evo, I had the cash from what I sold my G for, and I got a loan for the rest from a small bank in my area (my parents' cosigned on the loan). So they've helped me out a great deal with my cars! Sometimes there too nice to me Smile

Also, my Dad isn't really into cars (he's been driving the same suburban for 10-11 years now), so he likes helping me out with my obsession! I'm extremely grateful for my parents help with everything

There's a NASA event once per month, from February to November. September, December and January are "bye" months for NASA due to Nationals in September and it being cold and miserable the other two months.

This one is not this coming weekend but the one after (October 7/8/9). Hypardrive is on Saturday. Us worker-folks have a hotel room or two, so there is a place to crash for free on Friday & Saturday nights. Plus, we always have some fun shenanigans after the day is done on Saturday -- definitely worth sticking around for.

Good for you for working and paying the loan. I've heard of parents agreeing to match what their kid can pay, which I think is a fair way to do things. If you think about it... say your parents were going to buy your first car anyway, well, you might end up with some $5000 Civic. If they match you, they're still putting down the same amount of money but you're getting a lot newer/cooler/nicer/whatever car that you probably care about more.

And I hear you on the parents helping out bit... mine let me defer that loan for something like two years... I kept buying parts for the Miata instead of paying them back. I think the final straw was when I wanted to buy an E30 last summer. Dad said I had to pay him for the first car before he'd let me put a second car on their insurance...

There is usually a hyperdrive at each event so maybe about 8 a year. Come see me at the meeting tonight if you have questions as I will be going over the plans for the event. But yes, the event in question is next weekend(not this weekend coming up). If your not ready, don't worry about rushing to make this one as that will take all the fun out of it. We tend to get a little excited in here because we love seeing our members get involved.

I mean, all you have to do is make sure there's gas in the car and you have more than $50 to your name  But yes I agree... you are still welcome to come hang out for the weekend (as are others). I'm yankin' your chain because you expressed the slightest bit of interest, that's all!

Yeah my parents were definitely very helpful. It seems yours were too. And yea I completely agree and am happy they helped so I could get a great car. Thats funny about your situation with your dad and wanting to get the E30 while still having the Miata. But I am very interested in doing some Hyperdrives but this next weekend seems a little soon. I can't see myself making my mind up in the next few days about it so I'm gonna wait for another one to come around. $50 isn't bad at all for some fun around the track!

Spot on! That's how I got my car out on track. It's definitely the college option, easy to decide if you really want to throw more money into it or not.....although once you get out on track you'll want to Big Grin It's just a fact of life. Nice rides btw, cool to have you in the club.
