MM, help me find an M, Yes im jumping on the bandwagon, but Ive always wanted one. My current DD is a yellow 20th AE GTI and im getting bored with it and I hate yellow cars. Its a fun car but I got it for a good deal and I can flip it and make some money. The GTI will go for around 9k so Id like to turn around and buy an M for about the same price. Im kinda looking at it as a break even trade, but I get a RWD car that wont attract stupid yellow car attention.
The M3
e36 chassis
must be manual
must be a coupe
NO yellow, red or black.
must be around 9k. will go higher for right car.
Prefer stock but tastefull nice mods are ok with me.
lower miles the better but i do know its more about how the car was taken care of so I guess it doesnt really matter.
The plan is to use this as a DD. I drive around 20kish miles a year
HELP ME FIND A CAR GUYS post up what you all find

what are some of the bmw forums i can search? Pretty much all I know where to look is craigslist, autotrader, car.com etc.
whats the easy button for?
Also, I know the 95s take very well to mods being that they are OBD1. Is it worth holding out for a 95? Im in no hurry to make a quick purchase and willing to wait for the right car. Even willing to spend more money if the car is super nice and worth it.

I have no idea how the sell prices compare to KBB, but you could buy a car for less $$ that easily needs all the work that's already been done on this one... I dont think it will last long at that price.

when you say must be a coupe - do you really mean, not a convertible, or do you not like the sedans either?
I would check out bimmerforums.com
find an E36 in that price range should be pretty easy, just depends on your idea of "lower mileage" around $10k is right in the 100K Mile mark I think.
'98 M3 Sedan - Estoril Blue - 122K - $10.5

no?
anyone?

Anyway, sure, wait for a '95 if you really plan on going all out with engine mods, but just take a look around yourself, there's plenty to do to the 96+ and it's been well developed by now. Upgrading ECU software's easier than replacing a chip too. I wouldn't think you'd want to go spending a bunch of money on mods for a car you're going to put 20k/year on, but I'm old.

Ok yea.. i get the easy button.
coupe only.. no sedan.. the blue one posted above is also auto..
engine mods would only be basic bolt ons and prob never go further than cams

Actually in the past few years OBD2 is not bad to go to. Simply do a conforti chip, m50 manifold (ps I got one laying around ), intake and exhaust and its typically newer. It is now beleived with an OBD chip, intake exhaust, and m50 manifold, the obd2 is actually faster than an obd1 with intake, exhaust, and chip (comes stock with s50/m50 manifold).
Also the 95s have weak retainers, and knowing you, youll be beating up on it, soo that may influence your decision.
96-99 also have more torque, and 98/99 came with the three spoke steering wheel, much better sound system, a stronger front subframe, and a higher geared rear differential.

And posted link above is not bad if you can bring down the price. My vehicle has a bit less miles and has all the same maintenance/mods done when I bought it aside from:
CDV delete
ASC delete
I have contours and dont have the LTW sills.
However his has black interior, and mine is alpine white. I paid $8800 and I beleived I paid too much, but the thing was mint and the guy was a fellow autocrosser, (real reason was it was the color I wanted so I jumped oh well)
One issue with the above (although I think its a very fine example). Your going to have to replace the front control arms. They dont last on these cars when you start autocrossing/beating up/road racing on them/NOVA potholes. I didnt see it in the list, I am replacing mine this winter as I develoed a "pop" on track changing directions. They dont look brand new and track guys complain abuot em only lasting 1-2 seasons....soooo im overhauling my whole front suspension, and motor mounts (I have the same UUC trans mounts as the guy above).

$8800 is too much for a '99 in good shape? Damn.... prices have come down more than I thought.
IMHO A well cared for E36 is well worth a little more $$ once you've owned one thats been neglected and is falling apart (I have). Lots of little things like to fall apart and the earlier cars had a really neat self destructing interior - if its been taken care of with a nice interior and the suspension has been taken care of (shocks and bushings) they are really, really nice to drive.
Edit: The other alternative could be if you want a project and want to do you own work you could buy a high mile example and plan on a total overhaul of the suspension bits, cooling system, belts, brakes, and other wear items as long as the interior was in good shape. You may be ahead $$ if you can find one cheap enough.

I totally agree with your RJ. i too would much rather pay alittle more for a nicer car than pay less and have to spend a lot of time and money getting it up to spec
And DJ. Thanks for the info. I guess Im just remebering back in the e36 days when the 95 was like GOD and the obd2 cars couldnt touch them. Good to know the later cars can make the same power.

i think the wing and those godawful wheels it used to have are reason enough to not buy it. IMO it speaks volumes of the previous owners. i've never met many people who lacked taste, but whom i'd buy a car from. am i crazy?
