What sort of research are you doing on these companies?
What stats and numbers are you looking at?

From my chair, only seeing the results you post here, it looks like you are trying to time the market, but I'm sure that's not what is really happening. Educate me.

look at the board and their history with other companies
outstanding debt
dividends
52wk moving averages
fool.com caps ratings
trading volume
latest news
"do they have a good product?"

my most recent purchase was sysco (syy). why? they're very near a 52wk low, they pay a dividend, and everybody uses them... they're not going anywhere.

You guys should read Michael Lewis' Panic and Liar's Poker. He was wall street guy before he became the most awesome non-fiction writer. The stock market really isn't rational and information dissemination is not in the normal joe schmoe's favor.

I'm pretty much taking a "wag the dog" view of the stock market at this point when looking at short term investments. All I see is people react to the overall "feeling" of the market and the daily news cycle. When there are 100 news stories each day about "glimmers of hope" and "not missing the upswing" the market goes up. Reverse goes for "not at the bottom yet" and "recovery bubble."

Longer term, I think any investment for a company that won't go belly up is still a steal at this point.

Oh god I almost flipped out on you until I saw the throwup at the end. Meh. Ive made a killing so im not bothered, just need to get out of the high-growth stocks now as they are going to end up plunging in half a year. So the debate is how soon do I want to stretch it till it starts dropping..

i've also made a killing, but could have made SO MUCH MORE. i have a few plays that have doubled, but dropped three that quadrupled and one that octupled.

I'm out. For at least the rest of the year. Looking at this shite every day is driving me nuts, the market is getting really volatile, no-one knows what to do and neither do I.

You know, if someone cares to do a little peering into the financials and educate me.... please tell me why OLN was down today. That's the one that was the last straw for me. If you had bought it at ~16 yesterday, tell me you wouldn't also be shocked that it is now lower than that. I mean heck, it was ~18 in Nov, when the dow was lower than it is now, and that was before another great quarterly report from a company that can't keep up with demand. :dunno: Things like that concern me.

I just looked through at OLN after you posting that and I'm baffled myself. Seems like things were positive in the morning but the price definitely didn't hold. Maybe there was something within the 8k that was negative and outweighed the fact that they beat estimates? If i'm bored at work tomorrow I might glance through it some.
