ViPER1313 Wrote:By the way, why did the engine fail? How many bearings were spun? Mileage?

still figuring out the details but when i flushed the engine it looks like i dislodged some ugly deposits in the oil galleys and some collected in the pump when it all drained downwards. i guess when i started it back up, that crap clotted somewhere and killed the pressure to the crank.

not sure on how many bearings but at least 1 so far (got the call after finding out the first one looked like that)...milage is 85k.

overall this is 90% my fault for attempting something like this in the first place but i wouldn't have tried it at all if my engine did not have waning oil pressure which i'm almost positive is due to an oil sludge issue...thanks audi. it sucks, but live and learn.

The whole thing seems weird - I have never heard of a car's engine spinning bearings so suddenly. Even SHOs give some warning knock / a low oil pressure light before the bearing spins. It usually seems to occur while the car is being driven and the oil is hot / thin too. Even if you cranked your motor 300x with the starter, that is all low speed/low stress and equivalent to 1/3 a sec of idle.
Why do people just post what they are thinking? Without thinking.

i hear you...the whole situation is weird to me. unfortunately i'm very much at the mercy of the mechanic, and while i can request that they look at certain things, they had pretty much decided from the start what it was and what to look for.

i'll just have to see if they dig anything else up that might offer better explanation.

Oof @ spun bearings. This would be a good opportunity to forge your internals and maybe do a little headwork on your motor before it goes back in Wink

shortblock on the way

sorry, no crazy buildup...yet. between this, trying to get into a different truck, and a condo maybe a year or two from now i gotta be "responsible" and stuff

on a side note, after 5 weeks of waiting i finally got my 5 quarts of Motul Gear 300 from HMS Motorsports. the wait time was pretty lame but i'll give them two things -- helluva price and their customer service is swift and friendly. i'd check in every week or so with a "order status plz" type email and they'd be back to me within an hour with an update.

hope to have the car back this week. we'll see...everything involving this whole mess has been way behind.

new oil pump going in, new rear main seal, gaskets, head will be planed and pressure tested. various fasteners and crap too.

once i get it back, if it doesn't blow up, i'm hitting up all my diff and tranny fluids and that should do it for a while.

for any dub guys....Autohaas Parts in NJ does a great dub/audi salvage business. they have an ass-ton of parts and their prices are great. best of all was customer service, they hooked me up with fast processing and were very friendly.

home stretch, i can't believe its taken this long but not much i can do. things will be buttoned up this week.

picked up a 45k mile used K03 turbo from a cool as hell guy in north atlanta last monday. audi's KKK turbos have crappy lifespans, and i'm not ready to upgrade yet so i've been keeping my eye out for a cheap low milage stock K03 forever.

the guy i bought it from has a gorgeous hibiscus red A4, RS4 front bumper, 18" flik justice rims (sportec lookalikes), lowered konis all around and a mean FMIC among other things. the best part was the K04 turbo he upgraded too. i got to making some smalltalk as we made the turbo exchange and he floored me when he said "hey wanna take it for a ride....you drive." what? yes?

oh, it was so nice. torque all over and a pretty mean top end. its so disgusting how much more alive his car is than mine...its on par with a basic bolt on WRX in power and speed i think. the K04 is just a big version of the wee K03 but the difference is massive. i had overlooked it for a bigger upgrade but this may satisfy my needs really nicely if i find a used kit that someone is selling someday. and the sound....all the ricer whoosh-pshhhh that i hold so dear to my heart.

i also stopped by an audi meet today to get some opinions on good local shop for future reference (never going back to the current place again) and some guy rolled up in a week old RS4. earseks!!! photos later if i'm not lazy.

Scotty if you want another turbo for some kind of...nefarious purpose, this guy seems to have a reasonable price:

http://www.grmotorsports.com/board/view ... p?id=23521 K03, 11K miles, 75 bucks shipped, because it needs a new waste gate actuator.

Hell, I almost bought it. Seems like it would be a pretty good turbo for the metro, but I think I'm going to hold out for the World's Cheapest T25.

I dunno, if it's "too small" for a 20V 1.8, it might be perfect for a 1.0? LOL

the turbo is always "too small" my friend

actually what i'm getting at is that it's a shitty design that is old as dirt and tends to come fresh with a silly amount of shaft play built in which can lead to early demise. but for 75 bucks? hell yeah, put one on every car you own, including the briggs & stratton in the mower!

i'd love to change from one myself, but that will come down the road when the cash flow returns.

i'm sure you're busting at the seams to drive your baby again.

As an aside for the turbo conversation. If you're thinking about upgrading your turbo, I've always thought it might be a good diea (if you plan to keep something for a while) to buy a blown up turbo for stupid cheap and get it rebuilt by a reputable shop. This would give you the ability to have an essentially brand-new turbo, with the ability to add on stuff like clipped and angled vanes, ball-bearing center-sections, etc. for close to the price of what you would pay for a "good" one used. Granted I've never actually priced this, but it always made sense to me, even if it cost a wee bit more considering the benefits you stand to gain.

you and i are very much on the same page. i believe Garrett turbo is now selling replacement/retrofit BB center sections for very common journal bearing turbos like T3/T4's and the like. i have not priced other stuff like vanes and center shafts but that will actually be the first place i look. i'd love to find an old ebay-special T3/T4 out of a Z31 or something like that, and plug a new center section in along with a nicely set up turbine/impeller.

when i build up to a bigger turbo i will most likely buy nothing brand new except for bolts and fasteners of course. there's no point in my mind -- i'd rather buy something someone took a big hit on and either fix it up or adapt it to my purposes if it's not a completely trashed item.

since I know exactly zip about turbos, a question, As you were saying Scotty about eventualy upgrading from the KKKs to the K04s (i think those are the RS4 ones), is that a relatively swap type affair. meaning, can you just swap the turbos and i'm guessing some piping and maybe a ecu reflash and be done with it or does it involve more than that?
