That would be the perfect car if you could find one already built. Perfect.

I imagine that if one were built properly, into a car that wasnt already a total disaster (salvage title, engine fire, etc), it would command a price premium over the cars already in question.

i wouldn't. it's a cheap motor, and the car isn't even legal... i think it'd be just the same as any other project car, less than a mint original.

i'm pretty certain a motor has to be from the same manufacturer as the chassis.

 prove me wrong.
i am 100% certain that motor has as old as or newer than the chassis... maybe i'm just making up the manufacturer part based a mix of that fact and typical racing rules.
edit: i've found some cryptic epa docs that don't really help. found another site that said in some states swapped motors must have the same displacement as the original...
edit 2: zing - <!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.cleanairforce.com/engine.htm">http://www.cleanairforce.com/engine.htm</a><!-- m --> unfortunately they don't cite their sources. looks like it is illegal, but in most cases it isn't acted upon. thank ya very much, mr stupid hearer.
important stuff from that site Wrote:Engine switching is considered as being a form of tampering since the resulting engine configuration departs from the original design requirements for the emission-related parts, engine calibrations, and other design parameters in place at the time of U.S. EPA emission certification for that vehicle. Enforcement action is generally not taken for engine switching at the state level, but a vehicle with tampered emission controls resulting from engine switching will likely fail emissions testing and will not be able to be registered.

Well, there's no federal regulation regarding it. It just doesn't exist. (except, of course, tampering with emissions equipment) For swaps, laws very from state to state, but the only regulation I could find were emissions related. California, for example, decrees that you can't install an engine older than the chassis. For a V8 RX-7, this isn't a problem.
But considering in Virginia you can build your own car, I'm pretty sure they don't care what engine is in your car, as long as it meets emissions and safety inspection regulations.
If someone busts your balls only because "that engine don't belong thar", they're just being a dick.

oh i agree someone would have to be a dick to bust your balls for it... i'm just pointing out that i'm pretty sure it's illegal.

Meh. If a State agency isn't going to bust you for it, they it falls under the same "illegal" as blowjobs or the old "tearing the tag off the mattress" thing.
Not something that's ever gonna stop me from buying a car.

i dont think they give a flying fuck about it unless you're talking about putting something dramatically older into the car. As long as it's the same displacement, and has provisions for all the smog controls, you're good to go.

i saw WRX with the money - i hope you make a profit! :-D
I voted WRX, but not sure that fits you. I know you are a RWD guy at heart. I would ask for alot more if he wants to take it off your hands without you even putting it up for sale.

"dramatically" isn't a legal term; the law is black and white.

For about $13,000 a WRX is certainly an excellent choice. A Vette would be nice, but fuel economy will not be too nice. Problem with both is everyone seems to have one or another. I'd say go look at a Crossfire as you didn't seem mad after I took you out in mine (you can get barely used or new for $16,000-$24,000). It's got alot of character, but barely any aftermarket either. An RX-7 would be kool too, Ryan Farrel can probably find you a nice, reliable one for a great price no problem. I might just do that myself when the Crossfire's lease is up. Good luck in the sale and if it goes through tell him who detailed your car! Hahahaha
Re: Vette fuel economy. With the double overdrive skip shift, Ryan might be able to get 25-27 highway. Not Super Bad. Just keep the revs down.

Better than that. My brother and mother average 34mpg on interstate. Get around 23mpg in town.
