Road Bike
#21
I used mountain clips riding to class if the weather was crappy, and if I'm riding and I want to walk around some. They don't make as much noise so people don't look at you funny. I'd still say it's worth it. Just be prepared to awkwardly tip over while waiting at a stop light a time or two.

You have a good point, not sure i'd want to bike in loafers either way. That bike that that you linked looks to be a good entry level machine but dear god fix those handlebars.

Don't know much about bikes myself but my wife has a road bike but also a hybrid that is more comfortable and utilitarian. If he's just commuting with a possible back issue, would a hybrid be good for him? They seem to have a more upright and possibly more comfortable position. And by hybrid I mean closer to a road bike, rather than what sometimes appear to be psuedo mountain bikes. :dunno:

I have a little bit of a rub near lock but if you are turned to lock on a track there are other problems already...

i was also going to recommend this, a flat-bar road bike basically. this will provide lighter weight for ease of commuting. i'll even throw out the idea for having a single speed commuter bike for minimal maintenance.

flat bar road bike or a path/hybrid makes a lot more sense as a commuter bike, but at that price range you cant be overly picky with the shape of your handlebars.

Evan Wrote:2-300 is in the neighborhood of walmart and sporting goods store bikes. so shopping used is the best thing for that price range and even then you arent going to get much.

this is the absolute lowest end bike that would be ridable IMO

I figure its cheap and I can turn around and sell it for only like a hundred or two hundred less than I bought it for if I decide I dont like it. Thanks Evan for the suggestion, I also went to Spokes Etc. but the cheapest one they have is the Trek 1.2 at $700 which for a first bike....ehh.
I do like the Sequitor Trek (better for the back) so I might get that if I decide I need to ugprade.

bikes are a lot less "works or doesn't." lots of little unintuitive things to adjust, lots of special tools. working on bikes sucks.

ahah I will admit it, I would rather wire in a standalone engine management than set up this bike. I FEEL like it should be easy, and its not, so I just want to throw shit at it, also wtf? Bikes have different valve stems to pump it up. lol angry.

u shut your face!

i didn't know it was so easy - bicycles are misleadingly difficult to properly assemble and tweak. motorcycles tend to fit together.

Anyway, I want to throw out a special thanks to Peter Tyson for setting up/balancing my tires, in exchange for something else. Oh and I guess he doesnt throw up too much information on his car, but im uuuuuuubbbberrr jealous of his new wheel/tire combo.

Haha, yeah. The bike for the price is great. Just needed a little adjustment with the shifting and the wheels either untrued from the factory or UPS. I'll admit, if anyone wants a bike to commute on, for the money BikesDirect seems pretty solid.

I might make a build thread one of these days, but I rarely take pictures of my projects so it probably won't be very exciting.
