Road Bike - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-16-2009

It seems you guys have a little experience with this. Anyway, I was thinking of picking one up, but I have no idea what I am doing. Does anyone have an old one I could maybe try out for a week or two? I was told a size of 60-62 was about what im looking for because I am about 6'2.

Re: Road Bike - Sijray21 - 07-16-2009

i'd check out the local bike shop - you're probably really close to Spokes Etc. they'll let you test-ride them

i got mine from there and they were really helpful. at 6'2" (not sure what your inseam is) a 60cm sounds reasonable. i'd go sit on them and get sized up though. i found that my size varied for the different brands.

Whats your budget? Thats the biggest thing.

touche, this is true

Re: Road Bike - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-16-2009

I am not looking for a 2-3 grand bike as it will probably be sitting on a bike lock outside the office. Seeing as its my first bike, I would actually like to get something on the cheap. Dont worry im not completely unrealistic as I know itll be a couple hundred, but I dont need fancy as it doesnt need to be nor will I be doing any competition/dick jockeying on the bike.

Re: Road Bike - .RJ - 07-16-2009

What is "cheap" ?

Once you get an idea of what size frame you need, start looking on craigslist... although it may take some time to find something decent. There's also this - http://www.bikesdirect.com/

Re: Road Bike - Sijray21 - 07-16-2009

i started out on a $300 Trek with down-pipe shifters. this did the job until i wanted to upgrade. you should be able to find a half-decent bike used on CL for $200-$300

Re: Road Bike - Evan - 07-16-2009

Anne just bought a flat bar road bike from Performance for $600. Shifts great, solid components, lightweight, carbon fork, comfy to ride but still reasonably fast to ride. I couldnt find anything as good for cheaper, even online. Makes for a great commuter bike.
Im shopping for a reasonably priced drop bar road bike and Ive found that getting one with solid components (ie 105 or better) is $1k+

Re: Road Bike - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-17-2009

Yeah 1k is not gonna happen on a bike that could get possibly stolen. 2-300 on a beginner bike sounds awesome to me. I will have to go to spokes and see what bike "fits" me in terms of size. Now I know I have back problems, is this gonna be a problem with a drop bar (im assuming your talking about the u-hook looking things?). I am assuming for a 10 mile one way commute no, but what if I were to go on a ride such as 20-30 miles or more?

Re: Road Bike - .RJ - 07-17-2009

Depends on what kind of back problems you have - could be a non issue, or a deal breaker. Proper fit can make a world of difference.

If you can stretch your budget to $400-500 you should be able to get something decent used with integrated shifters - the older bikes had the brakes on the bars and the shfiters on the downtube, its a pain.

Something like this - http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ ... 62719.html - probably a little small for you though.

agreed - i'd avoid the older bikes with the stem or downpipe shiffters if you can as well. the STI shifters, that are integrated with the brake levers, are considerably more convienient and make riding a lot more enjoyable IMO

Re: Road Bike - Evan - 07-17-2009

2-300 is in the neighborhood of walmart and sporting goods store bikes. so shopping used is the best thing for that price range and even then you arent going to get much.

this is the absolute lowest end bike that would be ridable IMO

Re: Road Bike - xvxax - 07-17-2009

I think a 60-62 sounds a little long, but it depends on a lot of other tubes. I ride a 56 and I'm 5'10. I'm not sure how I feel about bikesdirect bikes either, I cannot believe those bikes are that cheap and come out quality made. Perhaps stick to ebay/craigslist.

Buy clipless shoes and pedals right away and get used to them.

Quick rant, why does everyone on craigslist believe their bike is worth $200 more than it's actual value?

No its just the re: re: re: re:tards shitting up criaglist with their verbal diarrhea that think that every bike is worth $50.

ask for higher than you think and you will either get more than what you though, or you'll get talked down to something that you were trying to get in the first place (atleast that's what i do anyway)

sounds like he wants this as a commuter bike, so walking around all day with hard plastic shoes isnt very comfy.

Re: Road Bike - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-17-2009

well obviously I would be buying used at that price. If you guys see anything that sparks interest let me know. Ikind of like Evan's suggestion on that bike.

And I wouldnt mind different shoes, I have to bring in different shoes to work out in the gym everyday anyway. Ill just drive M/W/F for lift workouts, and cycle t/thursday

Re: Road Bike - D_Eclipse9916 - 07-17-2009

Offer 150?

Re: Road Bike - Mike - 07-17-2009

i can't even see a make or model... i'm only on 2.5 hours sleep, exucse me if they're there.

Re: Road Bike - Ken - 07-17-2009

Wow, what a coincidence i'm looking for the exact same thing yet know little to nothing about road bikes.

Same price range for me as well, so i guess just keep the suggestions rolling / kindly let me know what is important would be greatly appreciated.
