Went to Wellsboro, PA last week for vacation and the Susquehanna Trail Performance Rally put on by Rally America. This was the 5th year my friends went up and my first year. We volunteered and worked the Asaph spectator area and the 12 Mile spectator area(2 stages). Our job was crowd control but the rally official(work with the same one every year) knew we were there to get great spectator spots. The best part is that once the green light car goes by to open up the road the rally official (has an STI) would let the green light car queue ahead then we would ball ass down the freshly opened stage getting all sorts of sideways. The turn in the video was the very first turn we hit on the stage, and sure enough one of the newb ass volunteers put their 2.5rs into the embankment you see block hitting(after watching numerous cars get sucked into the ditch from the off camber/mud). Anywho, Block won, Pastrana took 2nd, 3rd was one of the evos (ACP maybe). Mirra wrecked, some european dudes drove off a cliff(literally, got caught in some trees). Noone got hurt and everyone had a good time, so it was a success!

Man I really wanted to head up there for this! Do you plan on going next year? Definitely post up about it, I would really be interested in hitting that up in the future, unfortunately I went up to a car show in CT over that weekend this year. Any pictures? I read on the Subaru forums that the drivers were really friendly, very accessible, etc etc. Any cool meetings with the drivers?

I have every intention of going next year but it really depends on where i get a job when i graduate in december. I drove 11 hours to get up there (in raleigh, NC for an internship) so if I don't have to drive too too far I'll be up there again. We head up on wednesday and camp at a place thats 8 bucks a head per night. There's so much beautiful scenery up there and since my friends have been up there so often they have all the stages programmed in their GPS. I think its fairly impossible to book any real places to stay because the drivers and teams book everything solid well in advance.
We talked with a few drivers but I'm not a huge fan of pastrana and block just because they have too much damn money to throw around so they kinda drive like ricky bobby (first or crash). We did however talk to some of the other open class guys about the setups they were running and they seemed very nice and i didn't expect to get much info since most of the setups are "top secret". One of the best things is that these small little PA towns are completely overrun by subarus, evos, and other AWD cars and the only police presence was seatbelt checkpoints at various locations everyday. I heard rally brings 1.2 million dollars to their economy on average so i don't think the cops want to deter people from coming back. In the state park theres a strict no alcohol rule which is a good thing because supposedly in years past the locals would get crunk and become unruly and hard to control.
Also if you're into car shows i believe NOPI holds an event in Carlisle, PA the Sunday after rally. There was a car show there when we passed by on the way back to VA, and i thought i remember carlisle hosting a NOPI event. Next year I want to swing by NOPI on the way back down if the events line up again.
Both of my favorite cars blew up though, there was a DSM conquest/starion that didn't even make it past the first 2 stages before it blew up and there was a flat black wrx sedan in open class that was so raw that blew up before the asaph stage. I'll try to post up details about the one next year, including volunteer registration information.
