Bullrun: What would be your choice?
#1
I posted this on the Lexus forums but I'm curious what MM's choices would be.

I don't know why I was thinking about this the other day, but I was thinking about the car I drive and how I thought it would be a great candidate for a Bullrun race. Remember that show? Here's why I think it would be a good choice:
1) It's comfortable on long trips.
2) It's got great gas mileage on the highway. With 100% pure highway driving I'll see 33+mpg.
3) It's got plenty of backseat space for storing stuff for you and your copilot (Redbulls, etc.)
4) SatNav / XM / 6 disc / Ipod input - I would say that's a benefit but after reading the rules apparently you can't use nav tools, use a stereo or even a laptop or cell phone. So I guess that's not actually a benefit haha
5) Decent performance for the challenges in stock form. With upgraded tires and pads I think it would be a good match for 90% of the cars they had on the first season.
6) It's already got some dings so I wouldn't really care about messing it up.

What vehicle would you choose? Within your means obviously, I think everyone would like to be driving a Lambo just to say you're that guy who trashed his Lambo on national TV. The team who won last year had a Camaro, which doesn't strike me right away as being the best vehicle for a cross country drive.

Remember, power and performance doesn't necessarily win the race because you aren't allowed to speed per the rules. Ideally you'd want a mix of fuel economy, comfort and performance.

Not sure why performance is important at all? Seems like fuel economy and comfort are the only requirements for cruising around. I guess I'd take a hybrid Accord or diesel Merc.

honestly i didn't watch the show so i don't know what actually happens besides driving across the country....if i had to pick a war-wagon and knew it was going to get beat up, i'd probably just pick something american with a huge fuel tank (range, not fuel economy). maybe a P71 interceptor? if i do have to speed, nobody is going to mess with me.

if i'm not worried about dings? and have cash? 335d i guess.

Yeah, if you watched the show there are performance based tests at the end of every leg of the race. They were all really outlandish but they legitimately tested the car and the driver's skill in high pressure situations.

335i with a long-range fuel cell? Seems like a good mix of everything to me...

Lee what was your choice? The wording in your post looks like a copy/paste of why you chose something but it doesn't tell us what :-D

If only the fuel consumption wasn't abysmal...I'd carry extra gallons in whatever free space I could find

I liked the Spike Bullrun series, great show. I've been looking out for another run, are they doing it again? The one (and I believe only?) Spike series I watched had the father/daughter winners in the red Trans Am.

I've never seen the show...but it sounds pretty cool. I would choose the Toyota prius. It's roomy, nice interior, and a hybrid. That would only be for the crosscountry drive though. Otherwise, G35 all the way![img][Image: 2007toyotapriustouringecy9.th.jpg][/img]

Having driven practically across the country in one, twice..i'm gonna vote:

Fully loaded, back seat lays down for a nap while the other guy's driving, heatd leather, room in the bed to haul all your shit. 30+gallon fuel tank (15ish mpg though =\)

Very comfortable to drive, heated seats, satellite radio, about 29mpg on the highway, plenty of room to store stuff as well as lay the back seats down and take a nap (i'm about 6' tall and have no problem laying down in one), plenty of power to have fun with and awd in case you cross through any foul conditions you don't have to slow down too much.
