That's the reason a lot of guys took APEX. At times, the standard MSF at Nova has had over 6 month long waiting lists.
When it comes to Ryan Jenkins, the story ends with me putting him in the wall.

I haven't heard of the apex class. I understand from reading this that it is more expensive than the MSF. Does Apex also give you a DMV riding test waiver?
edit: nvm, checked the website, the class isn't in MD.

I don't have much constructive to add, those that are giving you advice have covered just about everything I can think of, and they have more experience. I'm a fan of cheaper helmets, my $100 HJC is comfortable enough, to me, for hours. Try on as much gear as you can before buying, especially helmets. An XL helmet isn't an XL with everyone. A size 46 jacket is like, a rough guideline that it'll fit a large human. But the sizing charts help.... a little. Wera forum, craigslist, ebay can be great sources of lightly used gear once you find what fits you.
I will however, 3rd the GS500 recommendation, I'm still loving mine. I love it long time. It will be going to the track again this weekend too. I've done pretty much nothing other than tires and front brake pads. Oh, and the $50 case sliders were well worth it, I've already "tested" them and was back out the next session. Compared to getting a 10 yr old economy car ready for the track, it is a dream. Yes, I get SMOKED in the straights. By everyone.
(my coworker might be selling his soon, I'll post in FS if he does)

when did they stop making E30s, 90? 91? So probably a 20 yr old economy car for you. And while we're at it, I'm still weirded out that you dont own a single E30. Will you please put a roundel or two grills on the front or something?

I had that exact opinion... until I started wearing a Suomy. I still have my HJC with a clear shield for night riding but the difference really is remarkable. There's comfortable "enough" and then there's "wow... I didn't know this was possible."

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth
i'm a fan of whatever fits, price be damned. for me, that turned out to be a $120 scorpion. in car helmets, that turned out to be a $500 bell.

my co-worker's '99 GS FS for $1900. I'm not bothering creating a FS thread because he's already got 3 people coming to look at it tonight.... it's likely to be gone! I wish I had an excuse to buy it, I've helped him work on it and know it's in pretty good shape now.

Ok, well I HAVE prepared 10 year old cars for the track. Part of the reason I switched to 20 year old cars was that the list wasn't any different. To get an economy car as trackable as an economy bike, it takes springs, shocks, bushings, brakes, tires, harnesses, seats, and likely some other modifications to cooling or oil system related problem that stems from compromises made for street use. And there's a lot more maintenance to be done, more fluids, more hoses, more crap that might break.
I will make a roundel out of my headlight for this weekend, just for you.

craigslist is also a good place to find good deals. I recently got an Alpinestars leather jacket, new with the tags still on it for 200 dollars. The same jacket is going for more than 300 dollars on all of the websites that I've looked at. I also have a icon field armor vest that I wear when it is too hot for the jacket, and I paid 50 bux for it. I also found the vest on craigslist.

I'll 4th the GS500 sentiment. I ride an '04F, Its light, sporty, handles well and is fast enough without scarring me. I also want to reiterate the importnace of good gear, from both a safety and comfort standpoint. I used to ride in just jeans untill i fell on rollerblades and busted up my knees, I decided if my jeans couldn't handle that fall I didn't want to test them on my bike. I have a pair of the Dragon riding jeans mentioned before which are great as well as padded overpants.
