great weekend! thanks to matt, dj and adam for working.
weather was great today. chilly but the track was FAST. the new repave is definately nice. I ran low .30s on street tires which is usually what i run on race tires.

Thankfully nothing big...I have a vacuum pump for the crankcase and it is just sucking too hard and blowing the oil remnants right out of the catch can breather filter. It got on the header so a little smoke, then on the belt for no power steering!! Made it in the pit fine... Awesome time, I'll talk a little more about it after I put the kidz down.

I'm glad everyone had a good time! I never knew "working" could be so fun!
It was pretty cool to put a couple names with faces, I just wish I didn't have to bail out so early each day to get to work! BTW, Steve's car on the front straight is truly a sight to behold! Under acceleration, I don't think the car settled down until somewhere past the start/finish line!

Day one started off with some pretty miserable weather it was OK though everybody was ready for it. I got into the tech line and Adam was doing the wheel and brake light check and I asked if it was OK that 1 of 4 bulbs was out. He says...
"Yeah, go ahead and hit the pedal" "WTF?, I am on the pedal"...NO bake lights So I go into the mandatory meeting with no tech sticker. I found a TOASTED bulb stuck in the socket so I dug it out, replaced the fuse and all was good. As I said in the earlier post, the rain really forced me to drive the car like it had no power, a great learning experience. I got SMOKED by a yellow Mini which was hard to swallow. Oh well, I told myself he probably traction control, ABS and all that other crap. (this moment is revisited) Day two I get a new instructor..Spec Miata Racer, Allen. I had the guy I needed the first day and this was the guy I needed on the second day. He was big on forcing me to use all the track, get the wheel unwound and get on the power. Much more aggressive and trusted me a lot more to save the car...several times. My vision REALLY improved which was something I really wanted to have happen. I/we were having a blast. I know it's not a race but when you realize that you're being pointed by more than pointing by with the same group, it's a sign you're getting better. Then I had the oil and power steering issue. Allen made me feel real good about how I was driving the track and handling the car. He mention that his student, in the yellow Mini, the day before just wasn't getting it, even after he drove his car to show him where he needed to be. I said "So that was you driving when I got steamrolled?" "Yeah, and I always like taking out the Vettes" blowing his finger like a gun What a relief, best news of the weekend. So long post but it was my first time...I had a blast didn't hurt the car, me or anyone else. Quote:BTW, Steve's car on the front straight is truly a sight to behold! Under acceleration, I don't think the car settled down until somewhere past the start/finish line! hehe....that's about where I was lifting. I cooked the brakes one time and really thought I was going off so I starting using the tower as a lift point and coasted down to about 110 into the braking zone.

Steve, You did a great job for your first time on this track (I think you told me it was your first time on any Road Course). It was a blast to ride along and give pointers. This was my first time as a "Ride Along Instructor" (instructed for SCCA 3 years) and while there were some exciting moments, I really enjoyed it. As for Steve's car coming out of T-10......what a feeling! I know how John Glen felt in Apollo whatever! Steve is not kidding about lifting at the Start/Finish line. If he stayed in it and he had any type of brake failure, we would have skimmed across the gravel at T-1 and would probably go through the tires and wall at the end of the straight. He showed a great deal of maturity in realizing this and lifting when he should. Great time and great driving. Hopefully more of you folks will come out to more Car Guys events....Great instruction and lots of "Seat Time". The Mini "S" is an absolute hoot to drive, even in the rain. Joe (my student from Sat.) will get the driving down after a couple more events, then, watchout for Yellow Minis...... Regards, Alan

steve, congrats on getting out there! glad to hear the car held together too. re: the speed down the straight thing... bravo... there isn't much to be gained in a straightaway, but there is plenty to lose. you haven't been on a dyno yet, have you?
matt, congrats on getting to the track. did you happen to get any rides?

Very cool to see this post here Alan. It was my first road course event and the small field, excellent instruction, and Saturday weather I think all played in part accelerating the learning process. Thank you for the kind words, vote of confidence and most importantly the instruction. Especially coming over and telling to go watch you through 3 and 6a ÔÇô 7 on your way out to a session.
Thanks Mike, I was very happy to get out of there with a solid car and awesome experience. I havenÔÇÖt been on a dyno yet. IÔÇÖm looking forward to it though. I know itÔÇÖs 150-175HP less than its ultimate potential but thatÔÇÖs by design and I got the power and manners I was after. I canÔÇÖt wait to get out there again and I just remembered I have a NASA credit from late last year when my car wasnÔÇÖt ready.

Mike Wrote:matt, congrats on getting to the track. did you happen to get any rides? Negative, it was all I could do to keep an eye on the grid and traffic on the front straight. I did manage to get out for the "parade" laps though. That was fun until we nearly lapped the poor fellow driving the silver 350Z. |
