Every time I do that on a bike (since I'm hyper paranoid about my bikes overheating) it's time to go within 10 seconds - without fail.

i only do it at lights i know. i do it waiting to cross 29 on glebe and also where williamsburg meets glebe. if you miss that light, you have a clear display of the walk signs. if they're telling the people to cross, you have at least 25 seconds of sitting to do (20s countdown, 5s delay).

For a generator (most motorcycles) - yes. It takes more 'work' to spin an alternator if its charging the battery though - the voltage regulator will take feedback from the battery's voltage and reduce the draw on the alternator if it doesnt need any juice.

are you sure? do alternators vary resistance?

Absolutely.

I have no idea what the effect of electrical charge is on gas mileage though.... someone needs to send this to mythbusters. They'll test it, and then blow the car up - win win!

They drove around in circles with a truck's tailgate up and down to test gas mileage. This is that far off.

Moving at 55 is basically the same as being stopped.

First Deersty, your wrong. Most cars do shut off the fuel injectors when your in gear and slowing down. First clue that your injectors are off, is wideband A/F. When you are in gear and slowing down, you will notice the wideband goes straight to LEAN. This is because no fuel is being injected. Also, next personal experience and clue aside from talking with many knowledgeable people about it.....is OMG, look at your injector duty cycle. When I am slowing down in gear, it goes to???????? Yes! 0%.

This is only true for manuals. For automatics, there would be no hydraulic pressure to keep the clutches engaged to keep the RPMs high enough so that the injectors stayed shut off. So the RPMs drop to just above idle, and fuel is delivered. Now, I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say that most cars are automatics.

what clutches?

All I know about automatics are torque converters and planetary gears, but I may be wrong.

Great thread Scott! I have read a few websites on hypermiling and turning your car off while stopped seems to work.

I keep pretty copious track of mileage, and it has indeed dropped the past few months. I think the ambient temperature outside has something to do with that.

I have also noticed that generally I get better mileage on the tank filled with Shell as opposed to the Costco gas. Manassas also seems to be the cheapest in the area as well.

I go to virginiagasprices.com pretty much daily.

I keep copious track of my mileage, and had a question. Currently I have my 2007 mileage in one worksheet in Excel. Should I go to a second one for 2008? Does it make more sense to track them together or separately? To see how 2007 is different from 2008, etc.

You should try them both, and patiently wait to see what works better.

I stopped tracking gas mileage on the truck a long time ago....
