My old man was the one who sent it. He's on dialup so maybe he didn't make it that far down the page.

"Here, at last, is the cure for texting while driving. The millions of deaths which occur every year due to the iPhone’s ability to stream the Kim K/Ray-J video in 4G could all be avoided, every last one of them, if the government issued everyone a Seventies 911 and made sure they always left the house five minutes later than they’d wanted to. It would help if it could be made to rain as well. Full attention on the road. Guaranteed." -Jack Baruth

I didn't even know they made 911's in auto. Does that mean a small penis and no perceivable testicles?

I don't think there's really a stark contrast at all because you're talking about relative price to something else in it's class. Spending 20k on a bike when you can get a perfectly good one for a quarter the price is kinda the same thing as spending 80k when 20k will do.
That said, I think RJ was commenting more about the vainity involved with getting your 911 as a convertible. I do, however, believe Feersty still deserves a :?: because there are Ducatis that are very reasonably priced. Who knows, maybe he didn't read the thread and thought I meant a Ducati 996. RJ's convinced my ultimate goal should be a Ducati and a Porsche 996.

Spending 20k on a bike when you can get a perfectly good one for a quarter the price is kinda the same thing as spending 80k when 20k will do. I kind of disagree. You don't have to pay 20K to own a Ducati. You've only really got to spend absurd amounts of money to own a new 999, 1098, or something elsewise priced at the top of the litter. You couldn't bring an RC51 , RSV Mille, Hayabusa, FJR, or otherwise also top of it's heap bike home from the dealership for under 10, either. Yes, you can buy a 1000RR that'll ride head to head with a stock 999 on the track, but if you think that's the only reason to buy that particular biken then you're missing part of the picture. I don't think the tool-ness comes from the price dichotomy (btw, you're not going to buy a bike for five grand that's going to compete with a $20K Ducati at all - compare apples to apples). I think it develops from the fact that in some areas you can buy a condo, or even a house for the price you'll pay for some of these headlining cars. They're out of reach of a lot of people and they're often associated with a holier than thou attitude, or something to that effect. It's not a phenom limited to cars, either. There are homeowners that act the same way, too. MM Falls Church has a few neighbors that have awful attitudes stemming from monetary roots. I think spending 4 times the amount of money than is necessary does make you a bit of a D bag, but simply stating "a Ducati" is a pretty poor qualification to satisfy that component.

I've been studying the historic price trends of 911s and they are a great buy at 6 to 8 years old. All non-turbo 911s have a huge value drop during the first four or five years, but then they hold value very nicely after.
Case in point: the 993 followed this trend and has held value (or in low mileage cases increased). I'm not sure if the 996 will be as solid simply because it is the bastard child 911, but a 911 nonetheless. If you're planning to spend $35,000, you'll be able to get most, if not all, out in 2 or 3 years upon sale. (Assuming you don't wreck it or put tons of miles on it.)
