So, will a clamped exhaust connection rust through/wear out/leak faster than a welded one? I still say that is BS.

Personally I think the clamped one will rust faster, but I have nothing to back that up. This is b/c moisture IS going to get trapped between the clamp and pipe. A welded exhaust can be painted to prevent rust. I painted my last exhaust w/ high temp paint and it hasn't burnt off yet.

Regardless if this is a street setup the muffler is going to rust out before any of the pipes and require replacement, so either way you are going to be under that again in a few years.

anything short of blingy titanium or stainless steel or alumanium (for the brits) will rust for regular street use. i dont think clamps will necessarily be better than nice welds, but either way, you're subjecting this metal pipe to lots of heat cycles, road dirt and debris and salt and moisture so its gonna rust either way. it'd be best to paint it if its something that you want extend the life of a year or two, or better yet, use PVC piping. that doesnt rust Wink and you'll get a nice melted plastic smell everytime you drive. those fumes are good for you

back to the topic, I had Piper "fix" the 240's exhaust while the seat was getting installed. Very quality job and I was pleased. Pretty cheap since I provided the resonator.

Anybody that was at VIR will understand the quotations :-D.

one more detour: What moisture is going to get trapped in a 200+ degree setting? Oil? Any water that comes in contact will evaporate almost instantly - and if the car is sitting around - unless it's parked over bare ground, a giant puddle, or something else that has a lot of moisture in it for long periods of time, theres nowhere for the moisture to come from.

You know water boils at 212 degrees, right? Is your exhaust pipe always that hot? And water is a byproduct of gas combustion....

If I would start the racecar for a few minutes and not let it run until it got hot, I would have some water sitting in the bottom of my "muffler".

Never had a muffler rust out :?:

There's PLENTY of water in an exhaust system. Just watch your tail pipe on a cold day. If you drive short distances and shut off the car you exhaust will rust from the inside out very quickly. You are not giving the engine time enough to heat up and burn out the water. Plus in the cold as the pipe cools down condenstation forms in and around the pipe (expecially around the clamp) trapping it in there.

Now w/ the new Superdutys' this isn't a problem, as on occassion they have the EEC programmed to spit out 1500* (yes, Fifteen Hundred Degree) exhaust gasses Confusedhock:

clearly the muffler has a place for the water to settle - we're talking about a 1/4" flared piece of pipe here where two pieces of pipe come together - not a 3" x 15" chamber/swimming pool

and yes - i know what boils at 212, but it also evaporates a lot quicker at anything approaching that temperature, which was the point, since I have no evidence to back me up that the entire length of an exhaust system stays over water's BP
