Local exhaust fabrication shop? - Beej - 03-05-2007
Basically I have headers, a cat, and a muffler. I need a place to bend some pipe and weld it all together on the car (and maybe add a resonator or something). Nicely; tucked up close to the body, flange together a couple pieces so I can take it apart, and I don't want it to fall apart.
SMS won't have a lift for a few weeks, but said he could probably do it after that (real nice guy, by the way). Martin Motorsports, Curry's, and InlinePro all said they couldn't do it. Any other suggestions within a reasonable distance? I don't want to have to go back to Midas for this.

AA Speed in Woodbridge is my reccomendation. They did my buddy's 3" exhaust for his Civic SI and it came out nicely. Also very good customer service, the mechanic that was working on his car got pissed about staying late to finish and quit. The owner of AA speed spent his OWN time after closing to finish my buddy's car because he told him it would be ready that day. Also painted the muffler flat black for free for him

you should get your stuff clamped together. It's more likely to rust around the welds if you get it welded.

ummm... all my exhaust systems have been welded... never had them rust out though. that might just be though

RJ, can you even comment? Have you owned a car long enough to see exhaust welding rust come to fruition?
And I didnt say rust out - I said rust..which would eventually lead to rusting out..but mostly just look like shit 6 months after you had it welded. Clamps give a nice neat - easy to take apart appearance with no rust. k thx.

If you are getting rust at the welds then it was a shit arc welding job.
Proper welds do not rust, period.

well thats not exactly true RJ. even if its a galvanized steel when you weld it, its going to rust... because well... you are burning of the protective coating.
there is a reason you paint roll cages! but really who gives a fuck? its an exhaust under the car. Its not going to rust out for YEARS... plus clamps just add more weight

Who the hell builds exhausts out of galvanized steel? Lets all go get some pipe from home depot and make our exhausts.... :vomit:

hock: how, in the bloody hell do you figure that? Maybe a proper alunimum or titanium weld, but mild steel, there AIN'T nothing you can do while welding to keep it from rusting. That's why they make weld through primer.

well you can do titanium, aluminum, steel, or stainless steel. most people just use steel... steel can be coated or uncoated. unless you have the bling aluminum, titanium, or stainless steel... its going to rust if you weld it :roll: but it shouldnt freak'n matter!

I've never seen a weld on an exhaust rust through - none of my stuff has ever been painted. The racecar header/exhaust was MIG welded stainless steel and held up just fine.

to "mig" stainless you have to use the right kind of spool and gas set up... and no that one rust if you do it right! so :-P dont compare your STAINLESS header to the mild steel exhaust
i actually gave myself welders fever this weekend with the galvanized metal! that shit will fuck you up!
weld it and let it eat... it wont rust out for 6-7 years.

i've had two pipes come across at the seams over the years... everything is stainless from here on out.

My header/exhaust was not stainless steel - I had to save a little $$ where I could. If it was not going to hold up on the car, Dave would have not made it that way.

Yeah...in all honesty I have no idea how long I'm gonna have this car. But I've also had enough exhaust systems fall apart that it's worth spending a few extra bucks on a quality system. That's why I want a halfway decent place to do it. I don't know how I'm going to do it in terms of what I'm welding, flanging, or clamping, but that's why I want to talk to an exhaust professional about it.
Autothority told me it wouldn't be worth what I'd end up spending there and referred me to this Fairfax Muffler place and said the guy there does decent work. Left a message there.

A racecar that is garage kept and only taken to the track isn't going to rust out anytime soon. It would have been pointless to spend the $$$ on stainless. I do all my exhaust work in mild steel b/c I can weld that and in 1-2 years I'm probably going to hack it off and do something different anyway.
