Will Debeljak (E46 330ci)
#1
I was a member of MM for one semester before I transferred to Clemson. Although I left, I still try to be an active member when I can.

My Ride: 2002 BMW 330ci

125k miles
5spd manual
Steel Grey/grey leather

Mods:
ZHP Control Arms
Powerflex FCAB
Brembo 4 piston calipers(all corners)
Braided steel lines
OEM E46 M3 rotors

Mods waiting to be installed:
Top Speed catless headers
AA tune
Subframe reinforcement
Team MFactory Helical LSD Big Grin
3.15:1 or 3.38:1 FDR Diff
UUC short shift kit

Mods I wish for:
Coilovers
Apex Arc-8 wheels

Story:
I found this car for sale on E46Fanatics and contacted the owner. Drove down to Cary NC to pick it up 2 days after finding it. The owner is an avid SE46 racer and knows what he is doing with these cars. The entire cooling system had been replaced, Inner and outer intake bellows, clutch and flywheel, alternator, tie rods, valve cover gasket, all of these had less than 2k miles on them so it was a sweet deal for me. Drove the 300 ish miles home on Conti race slicks and swapped them out for some Michelin AS3+ 235/45R17. Went down to JMU for my first ever Autocross a week later and won the novice group. I can't wait for the opportunity to take this thing out onto VIR or Summit.

Hey will! Glad you made it to the forum! I love your car. Did you ever figure out the noise from Verona?

Hope you're enjoying the program at Clemson! Seems like you are!

It was the Vanos, oil temps got pretty hot. I should probably go to 10w40 vs my 5w30, or put an oil cooler on.

E46's don't have oil coolers? Has the vanos been rebuilt?

I could be wrong, but I am unaware of any stock oil cooler. unsure on if it was rebuilt.

That's funny because e30s have them (and they leak). Look for likes coming from around the oil filter housing. I don't remember mine having a cooler, but I never looked. As far as I know, the Vanos is a wear item and needs to be rebuilt at high mileage. Jake's crapped the bed on his E36 and these dual vanos motors are prone to it.

No oil coolers come stock on the m54. What noise were you hearing?

The Vanos units just tend to get a little slow in the m54. Power will be a little off but no harm will come to the motor.

I assume you bought from Jason tower.

Those mods kick you out of any reasonable autox class, but doesn’t mean you can’t have fun.

Good start on a gts2 build though!

Yeah not planning on a spec class car, just getting into gts would be fine by me.

I'm mostly worried with suspension and brakes rn. New rotors and pads will fix the brakes from fade, but the car loses grip over bumpy road so a new damper or coilover setup is something to save for.

It was a really loud ticking, I believe it corresponded to the RPM, do I remember correctly Will?

It was the lifters. I'm 95% sure.

Shocker, a hydraulic lifter in a Bmw ticked during an autox Wink. As long as it is that don’t worry about it.

Yeah, at least with S50s and S52s, autocrossing will cause some gnarly sounding lifter tick, I wouldn't think much of it unless it doesn't go away after 15-20 minutes of gentle highway cruising.

Got lunch with Brandon, so it cooled for 30 min and was fine.

Part# said it was the rubber seal around the cabin filter, but I'm not missing anything from there. So idk.
